IPL 2022 Retentions: Prior to IPL 2022 Auction, there will IPL 2022 Retentions which will take place in December. IPL Retentions will allow 8 franchises to retain maximum of four players for IPL 2022 season. However, there will be top players who are likely to be released by the IPL franchises ahead of IPL Retentions. InsideSport takes a look at 10 big players who are not likely to be retained by IPL franchises.

1. Hardik Pandya: Hardik Pandya will not be donning Mumbai Indians jersey ahead of IPL 2022 Auction as the franchise is not likely to retain him during IPL 2022 Retentions. Mumbai Indians might retain Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard. In this IPL season, Hardik Pandya didn’t have a good outing, aggregating 127 runs from 12 matches he had played. The reason behind releasing Hardik Pandya because Mumbai Indians feel that Baroda batsman is no longer feared batsman like he was 2 seasons ago.

2. Suresh Raina: Chennai Super Kings is likely to end 10-year association with Suresh Raina during the IPL 2022 Retentions. The Chennai franchise might retain MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis and Ravindra Jadeja. Suresh Raina has been struggling with his form in this IPL, aggregating 160 runs from 12 matches. It would be interesting to see which franchise will pick Raina during the IPL 2022 Auction.

3. KL Rahul: After playing three seasons for Punjab Kings, KL Rahul is likely to move on as the franchise won’t be retaining Karnataka batsman during IPL 2022 Retentions. Punjab Kings might retain Mayank Agarwal, Mohammad Shami and Ravi Bishnoi. KL Rahul led Punjab Kings in 2020 and 2021 IPL seasons. In this IPL season, the 29-year-old was brilliant with the bat but the team couldn’t proceed beyond league stage.

According to reports, KL Rahul might join and captain new IPL franchise Lucknow for three IPL seasons starting from next year.

4. Shreyas Iyer: Shreyas Iyer is not likely to be retained by Delhi Capitals during the IPL 2022 Retentions. Delhi franchise might retain Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel and Anrich Nortje. Shreyas Iyer didn’t play India-leg of IPL this year for Delhi Capitals due to shoulder injury. In the UAE-leg, the 26-year-old wasn’t impressive as he had aggregated only 175 runs from 8 matches.

According to reports, Shreyas is looking for captaincy role with new franchise as Delhi Capitals is likely to allow Rishabh Pant to continue as a captain.

 5. Ravichandran Ashwin: Ravichandran Ashwin is another player likely to be released by Delhi Capitals during the IPL 2022 Retentions. Ashwin has himself hinted that he and Shreyas Iyer are not likely to be retained. Tamil Nadu bowler was bought by Delhi franchise in 2020. In IPL 2021, Ashwin scalped only seven wickets from 13 matches he had played. R Ashwin will look for new franchise in the IPL 2022 Auction.

6. Manish Pandey: Manish Pandey is one of the Sunrisers Hyderabad players likely to released during the IPL 2022 Retentions. Hyderabad franchise might retain Kane Williamson and Rashid Khan. In IPL 2021, Manish Pandey had a good outing, aggregating 292 runs from 8 matches he had played. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad might have taken the tough decision to release him. It would be interesting to see which franchise will pick Karnataka batsman in IPL 2022 Auction.

7. David Warner: David Warner is most likely to be released by the Sunrisers Hyderabad during the IPL 2022 Retentions. Australian batsman had a poor outing in IPL 2021, aggregating 195 runs from 8 matches. This might have led SRH management to release him. However, Warner regained his form during T20 World Cup and was awarded the Man of the Tournament. However, The 35-year-old will not go back to Hyderabad and will look forward to play for new franchise during IPL 2022 Auction.

8. Eoin Morgan: Eoin Morgan is most likely not to be retained by Kolkata Knight Riders during the IPL 2022 Retentions. England’s limited overs captain was poor with the bat in IPL 2021, aggregating just 133 runs from 17 matches. However, he led the team to the final, where they lost to Chennai Super Kings. There have been reports that he has dropped himself from the team in order to focus on T20 World Cup 2022.

9. Deepak Hooda: Deepak Hooda is likely to be released by Punjab Kings ahead of IPL 2022 Retentions. The 26-year-old had a disappointing outing, aggregating 160 runs from 12 matches. However, Hooda has been able to revive his form during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this year with four half-centuries from six matches. Deepak Hooda might be in good form but Punjab Kings might not retain him for next season. He will be available for IPL 2022 Auction.

10. Steve Smith: Steve Smith is among the top players that are likely to be released by Delhi Capitals during the IPL 2022 Retentions. The 32-year-old was bought by Delhi franchise for 2.2 crores but was not worthy as he managed to score only 152 runs from 8 matches and therefore led DC management may be compelled to release him. Steve Smith will look to associate with new franchise in IPL 2022 Auction.
