IPL 2022 retention updates: Biggest winners and losers of IPL 2022 mega auction – IPL franchises are scrambling for options as they head into the final days of the retention deadline set for Tuesday. A franchise can retain a maximum of only four players, with the rest of them heading into the player draft and IPL 2022 mega auction, to kick off IPL’s new cycle. The retention window will see some of the timely performers earn a huge paycheck, while some will see their values drop massively heading into the auction.
Here, Insidesport.in looks at the Biggest Winners and Losers of the IPL 2022 mega auction.
IPL 2022 retention updates: Biggest winners and losers of IPL 2022 mega auction
Loser – Suresh Raina
Suresh Raina has seen his stocks fall massively over the last couple of years and the left-hander will not be retained by the Chennai Super Kings heading into the IPL 2022 mega auction. Raina has been a stalwart for CSK over the years, but the emergence of Moeen Ali as an alternative option at No. 3 has seen the former Indian star fall down the pecking order. Raina, who has been the vice-captain of the side for a long, was retained ahead of the previous cycle, with CSK paying him a whopping 11 Cr to get his signature. It is unlikely that Raina, now 35 will command a similar fee during the auction.
Winner – Ruturaj Gaikwad
One’s loss is another’s gain. Bought for just Rs 20 lakh in the auction, Ruturaj Gaikwad will be raking in crores with the Orange Cap winner set to be retained by the Chennai Super Kings. Gaikwad, now a capped player, will at least earn a minimum of Rs 6 cr from his retention, a further testament to his performances over last season, which helped CSK win their fourth title.
Loser – Chris Morris
The most expensive player in auction history, Chris Morris runs a risk of losing the most out of the names mentioned. RR paid 16 Cr in the mini-auction to get him on board but after a forgettable season, the veteran South African will have to settle for a lesser paycheck should he be picked up in the auction.
Winner – Venkatesh Iyer
Venkatesh Iyer is another name that is set to earn some huge bucks before IPL 2022. Should KKR find a slot for him to be retained, the Madhya Pradesh star will see his 20lakh price jump over Rs 5 crore signifying his quick rise. Should he not be retained, his skill set makes him an asset to watch out for and could very well command a big fee.
Loser – Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik entered the 2018 mega auction as a hot property, and Kolkata Knight Riders shelved Rs 7.8 crore for his services as wicketkeeper and captain. Karthik eventually lost his job and was demoted in the batting order, taking over the role of a finisher with mixed success. KKR are unlikely to retain the Tamil Nadu star in the upcoming auction and at 35, he will not be commanding the same clamour for his services.
IPL 2022 retention updates: Biggest winners and losers of IPL 2022 mega auction
Winner – Devdutt Padikkal
Another player who went on to make his India debut thanks to his performances in the IPL, Devdutt Padikkal is also in line for a severe bump to his paycheck. Padikkal has emerged as one of the more consistent opening batters in the league and is all set to be retained by RCB. While the slab is yet unclear, but the Karnataka youngster is likely to bag around Rs 8cr from his retention, way more than Rs 20 lakh he was signed up for.
Loser – Manish Pandey
Manish Pandey is also heading back to the auction pool 3 years after Sunrisers Hyderabad paid a whopping 11 cr to secure his services. The move did not work out as intended as Pandey only showed sparks of his form through four seasons, and it is unlikely that he commands a similar fee despite being a solid middle-order option.
Winner – Harshal Patel
Harshal Patel has developed into one of the finest death bowlers in Indian cricket, and the RCB pacer picked up a record-equalling 32 wickets in IPL 2021. Patel went on to make his debut for India against New Zealand, and starred there as well, increasing the demand for his services. He was bought for just 20 lakh in the auction, but will earn in crores should he be retained or be picked up in the IPL auction.
IPL 2022 retention updates: Biggest winners and losers of IPL 2022 mega auction
Loser – Krishnappa Gowtham
The most expensive uncapped player in IPL history, the now capped Krishnappa Gowtham will be heading back to the auction having not featured for CSK in any game during 2021. Having splashed Rs 9 crore on the Karnataka all-rounder, CSK found no place for him in the lineup, and it is unlikely that he commands a similar fee during the mega auctions.
Winner – Prithvi Shaw
Prithvi Shaw is set to be retained by the Delhi Capitals and is likely to take up the second slab meaning that the Mumbai star will bag a whopping Rs 12 cr in salary. That is almost 10 times what Delhi paid to sign Shaw in 2018 after he was picked up for Rs 1.2 crore in the auction. The 2020 IPL finalists will hope that the young opener repays the faith put in him by the franchise and delivers the goods for the team.
