The youngster bowled 3.1 overs, in which he conceded 24 runs and picked up 2 important wickets. Pathirana first trapped Shubman Gill leg before wicket in only his first ball, and then in the first ball of his second over, he deceived Hardik Pandya with a slower one to get his wicket. Besides his wickets, his Lasith Malinga-like slingy action also made the headlines.

Speaking on Pathirana’s spell, CSK skipper MS Dhoni expressed his delight by saying “I think Pathirana is an excellent death bowler. A bit similar to Malinga. With his action, the margin of error for him is quite big. With a slingy action, he doesn’t get a lot of bounce. He has got that slower one as well. We will try to give guys ample time in the middle. I feel it’s important to give guys who haven’t got a chance to feature in the 11.”

Notably, Chennai Super Kings signed Matheesha Pathirana as a replacement for New Zealand pacer Adam Milne, who was ruled out of the season because of an injury. The 19-year-old pacer was a net bowler for CSK last season, and his bowling action caught the eye of the CSK management.
