As per reports, the two new franchises –  Lucknow and Ahmedabad – will be allowed to acquire up to three players each from the player pool after the original eight teams have made their retention picks. Here, Insidesport.in looks at three players Lucknow could pick before the IPL 2022 Mega auctions.

Shreyas Iyer

Delhi Capitals could very well release former captain Shreyas Iyer back into the auction pool ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auctions. Ravichandran Ashwin hinted that the Iyer won’t be among the ones retained, with the 2020 finalists choosing to retain Rishabh Pant and Prithvi Shaw. Shreyas Iyer provides the Lucknow franchise with a solid middle-order batsman and the experience of leading an IPL team, with few options as good as the Delhi Capitals star available.

David Warner

David Warner had a forgettable IPL 2021 but showcased his mettle in the T20 World Cup helping Australia win their maiden title. Warner had been uber consistent in the IPL before the 2021 season and subsequently had a fallout with the Sunrisers Hyderabad management, meaning that the southpaw will not be retained by the franchise. David Warner led them to the title in 2016 and Lucknow will hope to bag him and secure a run bank at the top of the order, while he also provides a leadership alternative.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Another player with previous experience of leading a franchise in the IPL, Ravichandran Ashwin will also be up for grabs in the upcoming IPL 2022 auctions. With the Delhi Capitals likely to let go the off-spinner due to retention restrictions, Ashwin could find a new home in Lucknow should the franchise pick him. Ashwin has enjoyed a brilliant return to the Indian limited-overs set-up and remains one of the most potent spinners in the game. His game-reading and tactical acumen also make him a preferred senior member of any team and will be helpful as Lucknow look to build a new core.
