IPL 2022: Kavya Maran vs Simon Katich – Sunrisers Hyderabad’s auction strategies left many fans scratching their heads, as they went all guns blazing on a few untested and underperforming players, whilst letting go of big names. West Indian wicket-keeper Nicholas Pooran was signed for INR 10.75 lakhs despite having a horrendous season for Punjab Kings, while Romario Shepherd, who has not even played a single game in IPL, was signed for INR 7.75 lakhs. Notably, all the calls at the auction table was taken by Kavya Maran, with cricketing masterminds in the likes of Brian Lara, Muttiah Muralitharan, Tom Moody, Hemang Badani and Katich himself being mere spectators.

SRH’s rift at the auction table:
- Despite having a heavyweight think tank, the auction calls were reportedly made by Kavya Maran.
- Kavya Maran is the daughter of SUN Network, the company that owns Sunrisers Hyderabad, while she also is the CEO of the team.
- Simon Katich was roped in as the assistant coach of the team ahead of the auction.
- Katich was present at the auction table but wasn’t seen taking part in discussions, with the calls being taken by Maran.
- Sunrisers Hyderabad are now looking to appoint a new assistant coach.

This, however, is not the first incident where the SRH management has come under scrutiny. Their treatment of former David Warner was widely criticised and the then assistant coach, Brad Haddin has revealed that the decision of not playing Warner was “not cricketing.”
