After a long time, the IPL has been expanded to 10 teams again while the mega auction has forced all teams to rejig their combinations.   • 10 Teams – 2 BRAND new franchises

IPL 2022 is going to be a 10 team affair. Previously the tournament saw 8 teams fighting with the title, however, the addition of two new IPL franchisee teams, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) makes the tournament even more exciting and promises to bring some mouth-watering clashes.

  • IPL Mega Auctions – completely new teams

For the new season, the IPL 2022 Mega Auction was hosted in Bengaluru on the 12th and 13th of February. The mega auction saw a complete reshuffling of each of the participating 10 teams. Each team had to rebuild from the scratch after retaining just four players. For two new teams, the number of retention was just 3. And therefore from a pool of 600 players, the 10 franchise built their teams for the coming season, which saw many players being bought by new teams, thereby making each team completely new.

  • IPL in Mumbai / Pune

The IPL 2022 season will be held in the state of Maharashtra with Mumbai and Pune being the two cities to host the matches. A total of 15 matches will be played at the MCA International Stadium in Pune. The rest of the 55 group stage matches will be played in Mumbai. Wankhede Stadium will host 20 matches and so will the DY Patil Stadium. The Brabourne Stadium (CCI) will host the 15 group stage matches.

All the teams will play 4 matches each at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium. While 3 matches will be played each at the Brabourne Stadium (CCI) and MCA International Stadium, Pune.

The 10 teams will play a total of 14 league matches (7 home matches and 7 away matches) totalling to 70 league matches, followed by the 4 playoff matches. Each team will play 5 teams twice and the remaining 4 teams only once (2 only home and 2 only away).

  • New IPL Format

Since IPL 2022 will be a 10 team affair for the first time since 2011, it will see a change in the rules regarding the matches played. In a bid to maintain parity among the teams, the 10 IPL franchisee teams are slotted into 2 virtual groups based on their number of title wins and appearances in the finals.

TATA IPL 2022 virtual groups are as mentioned below:

3 KKR(2) 4 SRH(1)
5 RR(1) 6 RCB
7 DC 8 PBKS
9 LSG 10 GT

 

Each team will play twice with the teams in their group and with the team in the same row in the second group. With the rest of the teams in the second group, they will play only once during the season.

  • Full IPL in India after two years

IPL 2022 is indeed special as it will see the tournament coming back to India after a span of 2 years. Owing to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the IPL 2020 in its entirety was held in the United Arab Emirates. IPL 2021 began in India and after a total of 29 group stage games, the tournament was shifted to the UAE when the Covid-19 cases began to surge in India.

However, that won’t be the case in IPL 2022. The entire tournament will take place in India. Mumbai and Pune are the two cities that will host the 70 group stage games as each team tries to better their opposition to take the coveted silverware.

  • Crowd allowed in stadiums

The world went to a standstill when Covid-19 took its grasp over the globe. Following all the necessary norms and procedures of safety when the games resumed, spectators were strictly prohibited from the games for almost 2 years. And thus the IPL 2020 and 2021 didn’t host any crowd. But IPL 2022 is going to be different. With the permission granted from the BCCI, 25% of spectators will be allowed in the games, adhering to the norms and safety procedures.

  • New captains for IPL teams which makes it more exciting/new strategies

Apart from the addition of the two new teams, IPL 2022 will see the emergence of new captains and thereby giving the hint of new and different captaincy styles and strategies from each of the teams.

While few teams retained their captains like Rohit Sharma for Mumbai Indians, MS Dhoni for Chennai Super Kings, the appointment of the new skippers makes this upcoming tournament more exciting. KL Rahul who joined Lucknow Super Giants will captain his side while Hardik Pandya who made a switch from MI will lead his side Gujarat Titans.

The grandeur of the IPL 2022 season can be well indicated when this cricketing event is all set to be broadcasted in 120 different countries of the globe. The IPL will be streamed and broadcasted LIVE this time in more than 120 countries. This is the biggest ever international broadcast reach for IPL.

In India, the IPL will be broadcasted on Disney Star Sports. This broadcasting channel is all set to see a humongous rise in its viewship. Disney Star Sports is ON-TARGET to cross magical figure of 4,200-4400 Crore in advertising revenues from IPL 2022 this year. According to the industry sources, the official broadcaster has already sold 90% of the inventory for IPL. Not only the broadcaster but the official LIVE streaming partner Disney Hotstar is also creating new ad-sales benchmark this year.

  • IPL Teams playing with new jerseys

As has been the trend of recent years, teams will be donning new jerseys for IPL 2022. These new jerseys bring new sponsor brands along with them. Apart from the sponsor, a fresh jersey acts as a refreshment from the team, it also brings revenue to the team from the jersey sales.

  • New Youngsters like YASH Dhull and other U-19 STARS picked for the 1st time

IPL 2022 will see the debut of some of the U-19 stars that rocked the ICC u19 World Cup 2022, with the likes of Yash Dhull, Dewal Brevis, and others. These youngsters that shone in the World Cup were picked for big bucks in the IPL 2022 Mega Auction and are all set to impress their sides in the forthcoming season.

Yash Dhull, India’s u19 skipper is a star performer. Following his antics, in the World Cup, he displayed his prowess for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy group stage games. Yash Dhull was sold to Delhi Capitals for 50 lakhs. Baby AB Dewal Brevis, one of the stars of the World Cup joined Mumbai Indians for a staggering price of 3 crores.

Indian all-rounders Raj Bawa and Rajvardhan Hangargekar joined Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings respectively. The Punjab outfits roped in Bawa for 2 crores while CSK picked Hangargekar for 1.5 crores.
