IPL 2022: 10 things to check out before the launch of IPL 2022 – With the IPL 2022 Mega Auction just a couple of weeks away, we take a comprehensive look at this season’s IPL. New franchises: The IPL 2022 will be a 10 team affair as two new franchise teams will make their debut in 2022. These two teams are Lucknow Super Giants and a team from Ahmedabad. KL Rahul has been selected as the skipper of the squad while Hardik Pandya has been adjudged as the captain of the Ahmedabad outfits.

New rules: Certain new rules have been implemented for the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. These included rules about retaining players. No team was allowed to retain more than 4 players. Each team could retain a maximum of 3 Indian players and a maximum of 2 overseas players. However, in no condition could the total tally of retained players exceed 4. The new teams had 3 special picks from where they could pick 2 Indian players and 1 overseas player.

Player Retention – Defending champions Chennai Super Kings retained four players including the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, Moeen Ali, and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

  • Kolkata Knight Riders too retained 4 players involving Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer, and Sunil Narine.
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad retained Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, and Umran Malik.
  • Royal Challengers Bangalore retained Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Mohammed Siraj.
  • Mumbai Indians kept Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Kieron Pollard.
  • Delhi Capitals kept Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, and Prithvi Shaw.
  • Rajasthan Royals retained Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
  • Punjab Kings kept Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh.

IPL 2022 Venue: Though Cricket South Africa has officially sent its proposal to host IPL in South Africa, the BCCI, however, wants to conduct IPL 2022 in India itself. No official confirmation about the venue has been declared yet. It is most likely that IPL 2022 will take place in India with Mumbai and Pune to be the likely venues.

IPL 2022 Auction: The IPL 2022 Mega Auction is scheduled to take place on 12th and 13th February in Bangalore while the main tournament is tentatively scheduled to start from 27th March. The Punjab Kings currently have the highest balance purse of 72 Cr while Delhi Capitals have the lowest kitty of 47.5 Cr.

Big name pullouts: Few nig named players will be missing IPL 2022 after deciding to pull out of the tournament. These include names like Chris Gayle, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Mitchell Starc. The players who took retirement in 2021 like AB de Villers, Harbhajan Singh, Chris Morris will also not be a part of the tournament.

Live Broadcast: Star Sports Network is the official broadcaster of IPL 2022 and thus the mega auction along with all the matches can be watched on the channels of the Sony Sports Network. The IPL 2022 can be Live Streamed on the Hotstar App and website.

Coaching changes: The new IPL season will also feature new coaches for the teams. Ashish Nehra will be the head coach of Ahmedabad while Andy Flower will be the head coach of Lucknow Super Giants. Brian Lara and Dale Styne will be the respective batting and bowling coaches of Sunrisers Hyderabad. 

New captains: There are 3 teams that are in search of potential captains to lead their sides. It is expected that the captains could be potential marquee players who would be bought at the IPL 2022 Mega Auctions. Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Punjab Kings are the 3 teams without a skipper.
