R Ashwin expressed his desire to learn from the best, i.e., coach Kumar Sangakkara, even after more than a decade in IPL.  Maybe, it’s because of this nature that Ashwin made his white-ball comeback at 34 after a 4-year gap.

“Sanga is a lovely gentleman, whenever I’ve interacted with him. The first time I met him was on a tour to Sri Lanka. He is a lovely gentleman and quite an intellectual man. So, I am looking forward to a good connect with him and discuss a lot of cricket,” Ashwin told Rajasthan Royals.

  • R Ashwin, who played for Delhi Capitals last year, was picked by RR for Rs 5 crore at mega auction.
  • He is one of the leading wicket-takers in IPL with 145 scalps in 167 games at a brilliant economy rate of 6.91 rpo.

Sangakkara bid adieu to Test cricket in 2015 after a Test against India. Coincidentally, Ashwin dismissed him in both the innings but remained no short of words to praise the Sri Lanka legend.

“I played a couple of Test matches, dismissed him a few times. It’s safe to say that Sanga retired then and there because, you know all these big batters when they get out to a certain bowler, they make plans and they come out hungrier, trying to dominate you. But I was, in a way, you know, happy that I dismissed him, happy that he was going to retire and I was a part of that game and quietly relaxed inside that he will not come upfront and battle against me again,” he added.

  • Ashwin will be looking to work with Sangakkara o raise his batting skills as few more years of cricket still left in his international and IPL career.
