Devon Conway, who made his CSK debut during the season opener against Kolkata Knight Riders, sat out of the playing XI in the subsequent matches. He also went to New Zealand for his wedding and as soon as he returned, he was drafted back into the playing XI on Sunday for the game against Sunrisers Hyderbad.
He immediately made a mark as he, along with Ruturaj Gaikwad stitched together a terrific 182 run opening stand in a match that marked the return of MS Dhoni to full-time captaincy for CSK.
Along with Gaikwad, Conway played a steady knock, finding boundaries as and when required to keep the scoreboard ticking. For a major part in that partnership, Conway took the role of the anchor and allowed his partner to take on the bowlers.
When the partnership reached the 100-run mark, the Kiwi batsman had contributed only 29 runs off 28 balls. He however shifted gears after the completion of 14 overs in the innings and took on Marco Jansen. He reached his fifty with a six over fine-leg and continued his big hitting with another boundary and a six in the very same over.
With Ruturaj, falling one run short of a century by getting dismissed on 99 in the 18th over, Conway ensured CSK scored more than 200 runs on the board. He remained not out and finished the innings by scoring two boundaries in the last over, helping CSK post 202 on the board.
Conway ended the innings by scoring 85 runs off 55 deliveries with 8 fours and 4 sixes. His knock was filled with impressive shot selection with delightful strokes.
