IPL 2022: CSA chief bemoans helplessness – Despite a rallying cry from an emotional Dean Elgar, South African stars have gone against the suggestion of their captain and have opted to feature in the IPL and miss out on the series against Bangladesh. The visitors will kick off a full tour later this week, ending mid-April, meaning that players featuring in the South African squad would have miss most of the IPL, which begins on 26. However, the players have chosen club over country, especially with the cash-rich league offering lucrative deals, rendering CSA’s position helpless. IPL 2022: CSA chief bemoans helplessness, says “had no option” but to allow South African stars to skip Bangladesh series for IPL

11 South African stars are set to feature in the IPL 2022, and will be available from Game 1 itself having opted out of the Test series against Bangladesh which clashes with the first two weeks of the IPL 2022. South Africa will miss the services of Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Marco who all starred in the series against India earlier this year, in what is a big blow to Dean Elgar and his inexperienced side.

While South Africa wanted their best players to represent their nation, IPL’s financial pull and the memorandum of understanding with the South African Cricketerss’ Association meant that CSA had no option but to let their players go for the tournament, which will run from March 26 until May 27.

Pholetsi Moseki, appointed the new CSA chief executive bemoaned the loss of players to franchise leagues around the globe. Speaking in a press conference on Wednesday, Moseki said, “The many leagues around the world have complicated the bilateral programmes of a lot of countries.”

He however assured that the understanding remains exclusively for the IPL, simply due to the amount of money the players make in the league. “Currently, according to our memorandum of understanding with the South African Cricketers’ Association, the IPL is the only league globally that we can’t refuse players going to. As CSA, we support that,” he added.

South African captain Dean Elgar, earlier this month had pleaded with his teammates to think country first with the Proteas losing their entire first-choice bowling attack to the IPL. While the players’ patriotism has been questioned, Moseki has backed the stance suggesting that it is a delicate balance.

“It’s a delicate balance. The players take playing for the country very seriously. So if the amount of money players make at the IPL is good for their post-cricket careers and livelihoods. player goes to the IPL [instead of turning out for the national team] it doesn’t mean they think less of the country or they are less patriotic.”
