The development comes as a big relief for IPL teams like Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals (DC) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Ricky Ponting and Rohit Sharma had earlier shed light on rebuilding a team around the same core.

As per a report from Cricbuzz, an informal discussion took place between BCCI and team representatives regarding IPL 2022. All the parties agreed on the number of players (4) for each franchise.

IPL 2022 Auction- No RTM cards?

  • The existing teams are unlikely to be allowed the Right to Match (RTM) cards at the auction with the addition of two new teams.
  • Thus, the franchise will have to rely on its retentions.
  • It could also allow teams like Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings to strengthen their teams.
  • The upcoming two new teams could be allowed to pick two or three players outside the auction with permission to buy a couple of foreign players if big names are not available.

IPL 2022 Retentions to cost up to 40 crore

  • The player purse will be Rs 90 crore with an incremental hike.
  • The purse would be increased up to Rs 95-100 crore.
  • For franchises choosing to retain 4 players, it will have to spend nearly 40-45 per cent of its purse.
  • In such a case, franchisees will have Rs 36-40 crore lesser than franchises who doesn’t opt to retain any player.
  • Big players like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant are likely to be retained regardless of their costs.

IPL 2022 Retentions: Formal announcementA formal announcement for the IPL 2022 retention rules will be made after the announcement of two new teams. The bidding parties have already reached Dubai for the event, scheduled on Monday.

  • Franchises likely to be allowed a maximum of 4 players for IPL 2022 retentions
  • No teams could retain more than 3 Indians, 2 foreigners for retentions
  • Not more than two uncapped players would be allowed for retentions for each franchise
  • Teams like DC, MI and CSK can rebuild their core while RR, PBKS can further strengthen their franchise.
  • A maximum cost of Rs 40 crore/ Rs 90 crore can be spent to retain players.
  • A formal announcement by BCCI/ IPL would be made on October 25
