IPL 2022 Auction: There are just a few days left for the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction. February 12 and 13 is the D-day for 590 players who will go under the hammer. Among those, 370 are Indian players, while 220 are foreign players. While 48 players have registered themselves in Rs 2 crore bracket, the likes of Kedar Jadhav, DJ Bravo, Matthew Wade may have quoted a higher price for themselves considering their age factor. While the likes of Ashwin, Warner, and Iyer might trigger a bidding war, the same cannot be said of Wade Jadhav and Bravo. There is no doubt about the trio’s match-winning abilities, the base price of 2 crores might not get the 10 franchises interested in putting a bid for these players.

1. Matthew Wade

Australia wicketkeeper batter Matthew Wade has reinvented himself and has become a permanent fixture in T20Is for Australia. Often coming in lower down the order in the past year or so, Wade was instrumental in Australia winning its maiden T20 title in 2021. The southpaw pummeled the Pakistani fast bowlers in the semifinal and ended up scoring 41 off just 17 balls.

Naturally, his big-hitting skills and the recent good form might have had a few franchises interested to have him in the team. Wade though has kept a base price of two crores. The franchises have only eight overseas slots to fill and with a big base price, Wade has slightly overpriced himself.

  1. Adam Zampa

Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa comes second on this list. He has set a 2 crores base price owing to his recent exploits in the T20Is in 2021. Zampa sizzled in the T20 World Cup and ended up picking 13 wickets. The leg-spinner’s performance even earned him praise from legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Zampa has played 14 games in the league and has taken 21 wickets.

The only problem that might come in the leg spinner’s way is his base price. Also, Zampa did not take part in the UAE leg of IPL citing bio-bubble. The franchises might have second thoughts to go all out for Zampa.

3. Marchant de Lange

South African pacer Merchant de Lange has also registered for mega auction at a base price of 2 crores. The right-arm fast bowler has a good amount of experience playing for various T20 cricket. He has played 127 matches and has taken 143 wickets. He has also played five IPL games and has taken five wickets. The 31-year-old’s base price though has caught everyone’s attention.

Few foreign fast bowlers like Pat Cummins, Kagiso Rabada, Joh Hazlewood, and Trent Boult might get the franchises more interested rather than de Lange. The 31-year-old’s pricey base price, coupled with his inexperience in IPL might get him only a few bids.

4. Kedar Jadhav

Once considered finisher for India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, Kedar Jadhav’s stocks have fallen. In the 2021 mega auction also Jadhav had put himself in the 2 crore category and he only got one bidder in the form of SRH. The right-hand batter failed to perform well and was not retained by the franchise. In this year’s auction also Jadhav has enrolled in the 2 crores category.

The base price might turn out to be his undoing during the 2022 mega auction. The seasoned campaigner has also not performed exceptionally for Maharashtra in the past domestic tournaments. The 10 franchises might target young batters or all-rounders rather than going for the pricey Jadhav.

  1. David Willey

England fast bowler David Willey is among the 220 foreign players to have been shortlisted in the auction. The left-arm pacer’s wicket-taking abilities in the death and power play are phenomenal. He has also done well for England in the T20Is as he has taken 38 wickets in 32 matches. However, Willey’s hefty base price of 2 crores might prove to be a hindrance for franchises. He has also played only three IPL games. England Cricket Board (ECB) rotational policy also might go against Willey.
