IPL 2022 Auction – IPL 2022 Retention Rules: After BCCI announced Ahmedabad and Lucknow as two new franchises for IPL 2022, expanding the tournament to 10 teams, there is a lot of confusion amongst franchises regarding new auction rules, especially retention policy. Two franchise officials expressed concerns after BCCI proposed two new teams will be allowed to pick ‘three free picks’ from the auction pool.

What is 3 Free Picks? This means both new franchises will have the right to pick 3 players from the auction pool even before the start of actual auctions. BCCI is mulling that as the old franchises will be allowed to retain 4 players, the new franchises will be at disadvantage. To bring them par with the existing franchises, BCCI is deliberating to allow both Ahmedabad & Pune franchises to pick 3 players each from the auction pool before the start of MEGA-AUCTIONS.

BCCI feels this move bring the new franchises at par with the old.

“It’s a proposal and we have had a discussion on the matter (three picks) but it’s not yet final. A lot of things are still to be worked out. It was discussed to level the playing field for the two new teams as they will start from scratch. RTMs will be decided soon,” the BCCI official told InsideSport.

IPL 2022 Auction – IPL 2022 Retention Rules: InsideSport reached out to few franchises on their take on the proposed move by BCCI. Both the franchises were very uncomfortable with the idea.

“We (the particular franchise) don’t agree to the three picks from the pool until and unless BCCI informs us clearly on the RTMs. The question is will we be able to use RTM for players whom new teams will target as the first three picks? We need clarity on that,” a franchise official told InsideSport.

BCCI or IPL Governing Council is yet to formalize the retention policy for the existing franchises. With the mega auction is set to take place in the next three months and the tournament to start from March-end, BCCI and the franchises are yet to get a full understanding of the proposed norms.

“We had a discussion about the retention policy and we were informed about what it is going to look like. We all agreed that 4 retentions would be important to have some continuity for the existing franchises. As of now, we will be allowed to use two RTMs but many of us feel that it should be at least three and should increase if the number of retentions is less than 4 as discussed,” a franchise official told InsideSport.

While BCCI has held discussions with franchises, informing them about the maximum of four retentions, they are still seeking clarity on how the Right-to-Match (RTM) will work if the new teams are allowed to pick three players first from the auction pool.

As per the new proposal, BCCI is mulling over allowing the two new franchises — Ahmedabad and Lucknow — to pick three players each from the auction pool.

  • It means the two new teams will be able to pick three unretained players from the auction pool first.
  • Franchises are concerned that if the new teams are allowed to pick any three players from the auction pool, they will not be able to use RTMs for them.
  • The BCCI and IPL governing council are yet to convey their decision on RTMs to the franchises.
  • As per the last discussion, each franchise will be able to retain four players.
  • Amongst the four, one player must be uncapped.
  • A maximum of three Indian players could be retained.
  • For foreigners, a maximum of two foreign players can be retained but that will reduce the number of retainers to three including an uncapped player.
  • In previous auctions, franchises were allowed to use a maximum of four RTMs. But it is likely to be reduced to two.

The Mega IPL Auctions will be conducted before 1st half of January. According to the available information, IPL GC will meet post ongoing T20 World Cup to finally decide the norms and the final dates for the mega-auction
