IPL 2022: Why GT are the favorites to win the IPL trophy?

A lot of things have worked in the favor. For starters, Hardik Pandya has been exceptional as a leader. He has backed his players to deliver. Bowling has been superb for GT with the likes of Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami hitting the right lengths.

  1. Hardik Pandya’s super-relaxed leadership abilities

Not many experts had given a thumbs up to Hardik Pandya’s leadership credentials. Worst, the all-rounder himself was returning to full fitness ahead of the IPl season. Pandya though found his mojo and batted at the crucial number four position. He also returned to bowling and in a few games bowled his quota of four overs.

However, the biggest positive has been superb leadership abilities. The all-rounder has backed players like Matthew Wade, Yash Dayal, and Sai Kishore. He has given them the freedom to express themselves. The GT skipper has also reminded calmly in tense run-chases and that helped the team win 7 games. Pandya has thrived on the challenges and has come on top on most occasions.

  1. Powerful bowling lineup with good spin and pace options

GT’s biggest strength – is a powerful bowling attack. The likes of Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan, Yash Dayal, Lockie Ferguson, and Sai Kishore have delivered wickets regularly. Even Alazari Joseph has been a good addition. GT have all bases covered with their stellar bowling attack. Dayal and Joseph can crank it up to 145 kmph.

Rashid can choke the flow of runs in middle overs. He has an economy rate of just 6.74. The star spinner has taken 18 wickets in the middle and end overs. Sai Kishore has also been a revelation with his off-spin and Shami has been the side’s power-play enforcer.

GT have won a staggering 7 matches in run chases in the final over of the IPL 2022. It is the most by a franchise in the T20 league. That is solely due to their two bankable finishers in the form of David Miller and Rahul Tewatia. The two southpaws have delivered whenever the chips are down and have taken GT over the line with minimum fuss.

Miller has scored a mind-boggling 449 runs at an average of 64.14. He has been the side’s most consistent player after Hardik Pandya. On the other hand, Tewatia has scored 217 runs in 15 matches.

GT have backed their young players Sai Kishore and Yash Dayal. While the former was given chances late in the league stages, Dayal has played quite a few matches from start. Both players have the trust of management and the captain. Sai Sudarshan has also played well in the few opportunities that he has got.

Kishore has taken four wickets and four games, Dayal has picked up 10 wickets in 8 games.

Probably GT might not have anticipated this IPL final in front of the home crowd. But they have got this golden opportunity to be champions in front of their home fans in Ahmedabad.
