IPL 2021: Sanju Samson says, ‘Dhoni, Rohit and Kohli congratulated him after he was named RR captain’- Rajasthan Royals newly appointed skipper Sanju Samson in a recent interview spoke about his take on leadership and how congratulatory messages from MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Kumar Sangakkara- RR Director of Cricket- helped his confidence. The 26-year-old added that he does not want to put too much emphasis on IPL’s costliest player Chris Morris.

“I got some nice congratulatory messages from Virat bhai, Rohit bhai and Mahi bhai,” Samson told Hindustan Times.

Speaking about his captaincy stint at Kerala and U/19 team, the 26-year-old believes that he looks that captaincy is like a service.

“I look at captaincy as more of a service to the team,” Samson told HT.

“A captain is someone who is there to provide the right kind of atmosphere that every individual requires in a team and backs each one of them. It’s a lot about man-management skills—giving positive feedback to your players, understanding where they are coming from.  I firmly believe that a captain is only good if the team is good,” he added.

Samson will be one of the four wicket-keepers to lead a franchise in IPL 2021. He believes that wicketkeeping is the best position to judge on a cricket field.

“He can see a lot more things, analyse the game better and is one step ahead. If you feel you’re in the best position to lead the team as a wicketkeeper, it becomes a lot easier,” HT quoted him as saying.

Rajasthan Royals ended at bottom of the IPL points table last year, but Samson believes that they did not do too much wrong in the previous season.

“If you look at our XI on paper, we’re one of the best. If we are in the right mindset as a team, I believe good things are ahead of us,” he said, adding, “It’s all about speed, power and expressing yourself. That’s what I expect from my team.

Samson concluded by saying that he would not like to put too much pressure on Chris Morris. “I would not like to put him under too much pressure or tell him that he’s the biggest member of this team. Everyone has a big role to play.”
