IPL 2021, RCB vs PBKS: Glenn Maxwell takes revenge – Not many were sure whether veteran Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell would be picked from the IPL 2021 auctions after Punjab Kings showed him the door. But Maxwell has shown he isn’t done yet after Royal Challengers Bangalore showed faith in him. This season he has reignited his form and on Sunday, he exacted revenge, thrashing PBKS bowlers en route 33-ball 57, scoring his third consecutive half-century.
IPL 2021, RCB vs PBKS: His knock included three fours and four massive sixes. Coming to bat at No 4 after Daniel Christian departed on a golden duck, Glenn Maxwell had a tough job, especially at Sharjah. But he made it look easy. After taking an over to get going, he targeted Harpreet Brar, sending him for 15 runs in the 13th over.

Then on, it was smooth sailing as he kept hammering Ravi Bishnoi and Mohammed Shami for his 57 knock, helping RCB post the highest total (164) at Sharjah this season. It also kept him in the hunt for the Orange Cap, taking his tally to 407 runs in 12 innings. The last time he scored 400+ runs was back in 2014 and since then it was a period of lull.
IPL 2021, RCB vs PBKS: But in IPL 2021, he has not only scored 400+ runs, he has also bagged three wickets including a magical spell of 2/23 against Mumbai Indians.
In fact, Glenn Maxwell has averaged 40.7, the best in his IPL career since making debut in 2012. In 12 matches, Maxwell has scored 407 runs at an average of 40.70 including five half-centuries and a highest score of 78.
IPL 2021 was especially important after Maxwell flopped in IPL 2020 in the UAE, scoring just 108 runs in 13 matches, averaging 15.42 and a strike rate of 101.88. This time, his strike rate of 145.35 is only behind AB de Villiers at RCB.
IPL 2021, RCB vs PBKS: What has made Glenn Maxwell hit at RCB?
- After a poor IPL 2020, Maxwell was low on confidence and had to turn things around in order to push for T20 World Cup selection for Australia.
- He did that in style. Even though he didn’t play many matches for Australia, in the IPL 2021, he has scored 407 runs at an average of 40.70.
- The reason? The confidence Virat Kohli and RCB management have given him. At PBKS, he was one of the batting mainstays but at RCB, he has support from Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers besides Devdutt Padikkal, helping him play freely.
- Before IPL, he has mastered his favourite switch hit once again and on slow pitches, it has become a weapon.
