IPL 2021: RCB’s Washington Sundar doubtful: India’s star all-rounder Washington Sundar’s recently picked up ligament injury has not just ruled him out of the Test series against England but also has put his participation in IPL Phase 2 in doubt. Sundar, who sustained a finger injury during Team India’s 3-day practice match in Durham, has been advised complete rest for the next one month. As per reports, he could be rested by BCCI and won’t take part in IPL.

As per a report by the New Indian Express, Washington Sundar might undergo surgery after the T20 World Cup as the injury could have a prolonged effect on his career. To avoid any further injury before the T20 World Cup, he could be rested from IPL.

IPL 2021 Phase 2: When all eyes were set to see Sundar’s return to India after suffering the finger injury, he amazed everyone as he took the field on Day Three of the practice game between Indians and the County Select XI. His catch to dismiss Mayank Agarwal seemed to have blemished scars of his injury. However, at that point as well, Sundar had discomfort while bowling and batting.

IPL 2021 Phase 2: When did Sundar suffer the injury?

As per reports, Sundar first reported his index finger nagging during the World Test Championship final and was advised rest by the BCCI medical team. Thereafter, his participation in the 3-day practice match seemed to have heightened his injury woes.

The reports furthered that the 21-year-old will leave for Chennai in the coming days and will report to the National Cricket Academy soon, where he would undergo rehabilitation. Sundar’s injury is quite common which is often seen among finger spinners. The injury is speculated to have been incurred because of the increase in workload.

IPL 2021 Phase 2: His participation in Phase 2 for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL will depend largely on his recovery from the injury. To quickly recover from the injury, adequate rest is required with the gradual increase in the workload. With IPL demanding rigorous participation regularly, the same may not be possible while playing for the cash-rich league. Besides, a lot will depend on his fitness test in the NCA.

The selectors and management would want the youngster to be fully fit ahead of the T20 World Cup where he can play a vital role with his off-breaks in the UAE conditions.
