Virat Kohli to quit T20 & ODI captaincy after T20 World Cup, Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma to takeover: Report

IPL 2021 – Rohit Sharma to takeover ODI & T20 captaincy: Kohli (32), who currently leads the team across all formats and is India’s most successful captain ever, is learned to have taken the call to share leadership responsibilities with Sharma (34), BCCI sources told TOI.

It is worth noting that InsideSport.co had reported as early as during the India tour of Australia that Kohli can leave India’s ODI & T20 captaincy in favor of Rohit Sharma.

Now the development has been confirmed as Kohli & the team management has decided to pass the baton to Rohit Sharma.

Virat Kohli to quit T20 & ODI captaincy – Rohit Sharma to takeover: Why is Kohli taking this decision to quit as white-ball captain?

Reason, clearly is that Kohli wants to focus more on his batting. Captaincy in all 3 formats is getting too much to handle for the champion Indian and is affecting his batting.

The report says that Kohli has already informed BCCI, team management and of-course Rohit Sharma about his intent.

Kohli’s Performance as India Captain across all formats

Test Matches – 65 / Won 38
ODI’s – 95 / Won 65
T20’s – 45 / Won 29

Why Rohit Sharma is a great choice to lead India in T20’s & ODI’s?

IPL 2021 – Rohit Sharma to takeover ODI & T20 captaincy: Rohit Sharma is a great choice because he without any doubt is the most successful captain in IPL history.

This is no mean achievement. The IPL is the most sought after T20 league in the world with the maximum number of world class players. Rohit has led the Mumbai Indians (MI) to victory in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.

He took over the reigns from Harbhajan Singh in 2013 and immediately tasted success leading MI to victory beating CSK in the final at the Eden Gardens by 23 runs. From 2013 to 2020, Rohit has led MI to 5 titles and made the playoff 6 times in 8 editions.

Rohit as Captain of Indian White-Ball Team: Rohit has not got many opportunities to lead India in limited overs but has been brilliant whenever he has been asked to take over the responsibility.

India has won 8 of the 10 ODIs under his leadership including a win in the Asia Cup in Dubai in 2018.

His record as captain in T20I cricket is even more outstanding. India has won 15 of the 19 matches under Rohit’s captaincy in the format. These include victories in the Nidahas tri-series in Sri Lanka in 2018 and a 3-0 series sweep against West Indies at home in 2018.
