IPL 2021: Chris Morris costliest failure? Chris Morris’s eye-popping Rs 16.25 crore auction price raised many eyebrows as he was yet to prove a point in IPL. But as Rajasthan Royals suffered in the death overs, they needed an all-rounder who could bowl in the death and also play the role of a power-hitter taking his team to the finishing line. But in IPL 2021, the RR all-rounder turned out to be a rather costly mistake. In fact, his IPL 2021 adventure cost RR Rs 1.08 crore per wicket and Rs 24.25 lakh per run he scored.

Chris Morris, to live up to the expectations, needed a fantastic season. But his 15 wickets in 11 matches and just 67 runs in as many weren’t enough as Rajasthan Royals suffered yet another early exit from IPL without making the playoffs.

IPL 2021: Chris Morris costliest failure? His stats make the price RR paid for him look even more ridiculous. In fact, Rajasthan Royals paid Rs 1.08 crore for every wicket and Rs 24.25 lakh for each run he scored. Sunil Gavaskar too was not impressed with Chris Morris’ performance, pointing out that Morris hadn’t yet proven his worth for other franchises either.

“There were so high expectations of him when Rajasthan picked him and I know it’s always not possible to live up to the high expectations. He is just the kind of cricketer who has always had the promise but very seldom has delivered in his entire cricketing career. It is not just about this IPL. There have been high hopes of him when he has played for South Africa but he hasn’t quite lived up to expectations,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

But it would not be the first time that Chris Morris had failed to live up to the expectations after being sold for Rs 10 crore. During his Royal Challengers Bangalore stint, he played nine matches scoring 34 runs at an average of 8.50. With the ball, he scalped just 11 wickets.

At RR, apart from 15 wickets, he again had a disappointing season and even though he wasn’t fully responsible for a disastrous season, he failed to make an impact, leaving it on the likes of Sanju Samson, Kartik Tyagi, Chetan Sakariya with the ball. When Mustafizur Rahman had a bad day, Morris didn’t step up to lead RR’s bowling. That he leaked runs at an economy of 9.17 says a lot. There, RR missed the likes of Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer the most — something Chris Morris failed to deliver.

With the bat, he never settled on slow wickets in either India or in the UAE and that reflected on the runs he scored.
