It’s been a special journey for Umran Malik who was picked as last-minute replacement for COVID-19 positive T Natarajan. The youngster’s journey began when he landed at coaching near his home without even proper sports shoes. The simple lanky boy just wanted to bowl in the nets.

From being a net bowler to going on to make debut and share the experience with one of the greats, life has been a roller-coaster for Umran Mallick. He began his journey four years on a concrete pitch in J&K.

He was spotted by a J&K player who helped him in getting in touch with coach Randhir Singh Manhas. Umran went on to be picked in U19 trials in Jammu and later picked by J&K team. He was then groomed by J&K coach Irfan Pathan and veteran Parvez Rasool.

“Some of the junior players in our side used to be afraid to face him. They feared they would get hit. He had raw pace, which caught everyone’s eye,” Rasool told Indian Express

“You could make out his pace from the way the wicket-keeper used to collect his deliveries. He was a natural fast bowler. Like any young kid, he loved to hit batsmen, hit them on their thigh pads. He was a touch raw, he had a high jump while landing, so we worked on it,’’ Pathan added.

IPL 2021 Fastest Delivery: Umran Malik got a chance to play in the Vijay Hazare trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament last season. Soon his J&K teammate recommended his name as net bowler.

Kane Williamson was all praise for young Umran Malik who bowled the fastest delivery by an Indian youngster. He continued to create troubles for Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer.

Speaking about young bowler Umran Malik, Williamson said, “He (Malik) has been bowling really quick in the nets and it’s really nice for him to get an opportunity today. Obviously, we’re out of the competition, so it’s a chance for some other boys to also get on the park.”
