IPL 2021, DC vs CSK: Faf du Plessis not facing concussion recurrence – Chennai Super Kings’ most reliable opener Faf du Plessis gave the team a scare of recurrence of his concussion issue that sidelined him for four months. The former South Africa captain was seen clutching his neck following a collision with Mustafizur Rahman in the match against RR and looked in discomfort. But CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed to InsideSport that it was not the recurrence of his concussion problem and that he is ‘alright’.  – Follow all LIVE Updates on InsideSport.co

It all started when Faf du Plessis suffered a concussion following a collision with Mohammad Hasnain while fielding in a PSL 2021 match in June. What seemed a normal concussion at first soon began troubling him as he faced memory loss and blurry vision. The symptoms worsened and he had to pull out of The Hundred. On Saturday, in Abu Dhabi, he was back at the same ground where he suffered the concussion injury.

IPL 2021: Why a Faf du Plessis’ concussion issue a cause for concern?

  • A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that occurs after a blow or collision.
  • It usually heals itself within 72 hours of the incident but severe concussion could lead to memory loss, blurry vision, nausea, vomiting, headache amongst others, rendering an athlete unfit.
  • But if it recurs, it could lead to permanent brain damage with severe symptoms and could even end an athlete’s career.
  • In the US’ NFL and in MMA, many athletes have suffered career-ending concussions.
  • As Faf faced a potential concussion and blow to the same region of the head and neck after collision with Mustafizur, it gave a scare that the concussion could recur.
  • If that happened, he would have been ruled out of IPL 2021 and would have needed to undergo extensive treatment.
  • Ahead of IPL 2021 playoffs, it gave a major scare to CSK but since it is not a recurrence, Du Plessis is okay to continue.

IPL 2021: While he did well during field despite horrific memories of the incident when he had a severe collision with Hasnain, it was during batting when he had the injury scare once again.

In the 6th over of the match, he collided with RR pacer Mustafizur Rahman while trying to steal a quick single. The CSK opener had his eyes on the ball and so did Mustafizur. Faf Du Plessis collided with Mustafizur and looked in trouble as he was seen clutching his neck. The physios had to rush in. While physios gave him the green signal after a brief on-field check-up, it definitely raised concerns about his condition, especially having recovered from the previous concussion only before CPL 2021.

IPL 2021: Before the incident, Du Plessis spoke about the incident and his uneasiness in playing at the same ground.

“I walked in here today and I realised the last time I was here was when I picked up my concussion. So, it’s probably not the best start to the day so it can only get better from there hopefully. Took a long time – four months to get through that. Still having neck issues from that incident but nothing that’s going to keep me off the park. MS asked me how am I to do those high pocket areas and I said I’m good to go,” Faf du Plessis told Star Sports.

However, Chennai Super Kings have alleviated the concerns and he is good to go against top-of-the-table clash against Delhi Capitals on Monday.

“He was checked by the team doctor on the field that day and then again after the match and they did not find an issue. It was not the recurrence of concussion. It was a blow after the collision. Nothing serious,” the CSK official said.
