Instead of taking onus for slow batting, KL Rahul cleverly blames ‘young LSG bowlers’ after yet another IPL 2024 loss

Did Rahul's cautious batting and deflection of blame mask his own contribution to LSG's heavy defeat? Only time will tell if he can learn from this experience and lead his team to a stronger performance in the remaining IPL 2024 matches.

KL Rahul, captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), has come under fire for his cautious batting approach in their massive 98-run defeat to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday. While acknowledging the overall team failure, KL Rahul appeared to deflect some of the blame towards his bowlers and their inexperience, without taking onus on himself for his slow batting.

Target too big for LSG and KL Rahul?

Set a daunting target of 236 runs, LSG’s chase faltered from the outset. KL Rahul, known for his anchoring role, scored a slow 25 runs off 21 balls, failing to provide the aggressive start his team desperately needed. This drew criticism from fans who felt his cautious batting hampered LSG’s chase.

Bowling woes or KL Rahul call?

In the post-match presentation, KL Rahul labeled the loss a “poor performance overall” but seemed to place particular emphasis on the bowling attack’s struggles. He suggested his bowlers were 20-30 runs short of par in containing KKR’s batsmen.

When you’re chasing a big total, you try to go hard and you end up losing wickets. So just a poor performance overall,” KL said.

However, some observers questioned his own batting tactics, suggesting a more aggressive approach from the skipper could have set a different tone for the chase.

LSG young bowlers not up to mark?

KL Rahul also pointed towards the “young bowlers” struggling to handle the pressure exerted by KKR’s openers, particularly the explosive Sunil Narine. While acknowledging the challenges posed by experienced batsmen, some fans felt this was a convenient excuse, deflecting attention away from his own batting choices.

We’ve seen how they have batted. They put a lot of pressure on the opposition, and our young bowlers just couldn’t handle that kind of pressure,” he said. “He [Narine] hit some really, really good shots, and that’s how the IPL is: you’ll come up against some really good players, and that’s when your character is tested. And I think we weren’t up to the mark today.”

“Once we come here [to Lucknow], it’s about execution, and we went wrong on that part. Bowlers tried their best. But the sooner you learn, the better it is for our team. We’ve made a couple of mistakes when we’ve come up against batters like Sunil or anyone who is powerful, and is striking over 200 or 250. Someone with that kind of intimidation has put a bit of pressure on our bowlers.”

LSG vs KKR: IPL 2024 match to Learn From

Despite the criticism, KL Rahul did concede that there were lessons to be learned from the defeat. He acknowledged the need for better execution, particularly when facing powerful batsmen. LSG will be hoping to address their shortcomings and bounce back in their remaining matches.

Did Rahul’s cautious batting and deflection of blame mask his own contribution to LSG’s heavy defeat? Only time will tell if he can learn from this experience and lead his team to a stronger performance in the remaining IPL 2024 matches.
