Injury concern for Team India? Can T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav prove his fitness

For Suryakumar Yadav, the Duleep Trophy serves as a crucial platform to not only regain match fitness but also strengthen his claim for a possible spot in India’s Test side.

As Team India gears up for a crucial series against Bangladesh, all eyes are on Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian T20I captain, who is working to prove his fitness ahead of the upcoming matches. After missing the first round of the Duleep Trophy, there’s speculation about whether SKY will play for India C in their second-round clash against India B in Anantapur.

His participation could be a key indicator of his readiness for the T20 series against Bangladesh scheduled for October.

Suryakumar Yadav: Recovering from Injury

Suryakumar Yadav, popularly known as SKY, sustained a sprained right thumb while fielding during a Buchi Babu Invitational tournament match against TNCA XI. The injury forced him to sit out the second innings of the game. Since then, SKY has been undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to recover in time for the Duleep Trophy and future international commitments.

A BCCI official recently provided an update, saying to HT, “Surya’s recovery is going well. He is almost 100 per cent and he knows it.” This statement came during the Duleep Trophy match between India A and India B, raising hopes of SKY’s return.

Crucial Time for Indian T20I skipper

SKY was initially expected to feature for India C in the first round of the Duleep Trophy but was ruled out as a precautionary measure. The BCCI, in a statement, said, “The BCCI Medical Team is continuing to assess his injury, and a further evaluation next week will determine his availability for the second round.” His recovery is being closely monitored as he eyes a return to competitive cricket.

Duleep Trophy and Test Hopes?

For Suryakumar Yadav, the Duleep Trophy serves as a crucial platform to not only regain match fitness but also strengthen his claim for a spot in India’s Test side.

Although he has excelled in T20Is, SKY is still trying to make a significant impact in the Test arena. He earned his Test cap during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia earlier this year but was sidelined due to injury shortly after.

What lies ahead for Suryakumar Yadav?

While it is unclear whether SKY will feature in the second round of the Duleep Trophy starting on 12 September, his performance in the latter stages of the tournament could influence his inclusion in the second India vs Bangladesh Test match. His fitness and form will be crucial for India’s T20 campaigns in the months ahead.
