Indirect jibe at Babar Azam? Rizwan wants to be “servant”, not “king” as Pakistan captain

Pakistan's newly appointed white-ball skipper Mohammad Rizwan outlined his vision as the captain and addressed concerns over rifts in the camp

Newly appointed Pakistan white-ball captain Mohammad Rizwan wants to be a “servant” more than a “king”. The keeper-batter succeeded King Babar Azam (as fans fondly call him) after the latter resigned following the T20 World Cup. In his first address as captain, Rizwan outlined his goals as a leader while also shedding light on the group dynamics of the side which have been under the radar for a while now.

Rizwan wants to lead Pakistan like a “servant”

Addressing a press conference along with PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, Rizwan claimed that a leader should be the servant of 15 players rather than thinking like a king. He said that his role as a captain was to attend the toss, press conferences and presentations, and that all players were skippers on the field. His predecessor, Babar Azam, did not enjoy good relations with the team and reportedly felt aloof from the side, especially after their debacle in the USA.

If I think of myself as a king while being captain, then everything’s wrong. In fact, a leader should be like a servant to the 15 players,” Mohammad Rizwan said.

On being asked about group dynamics within the team and reports of differences, Rizwan claimed that he considered the whole team as one group.

Yes, I am part of a group: the group of the whole Pakistan team, alhamdulillah. For me, as a captain, all 15 players of Pakistan are captains,” Rizwan added.

Mohammad Rizwan named new Pakistan captain

PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi informed at a press conference that the board arrived at the decision after consultation with the players and the selection committee. He also added that he had held one on one talks with both Rizwan and Agha over escalating them to the leadership position. Rizwan has a tall task at hand on taking over captaincy, with Pakistan’s schedule loaded with white-ball fixtures leading to the Champions Trophy 2025.

Pakistan have finally named their new skipper, with the side set to depart for Australia on October 29.
