‘India’s Pele’, Election Commission of India to recognise Sachin Tendulkar as ‘National Icon’

An event to honor Sachin Tendulkar as the National Icon of India will take place In New Delhi on August 23.

Leading run-scorer in World Cricket check, One of the Greatest Cricketer – check, Bharat Ratna – check, and now Sachin Tendulkar will be recognized as National Icon of Election Commission of India. The legendary cricketer will be honored in an event that will take place at the Rang Bhawan Auditorium, New Delhi on Wednesday, (August 23).

Tendulkar had a career spanning 24 years in which he represented India in 200 Tests (most by any player). The right-hand batter finished the longest format of the game by scoring 15,921 runs (the most by any player), scoring 51 centuries and 68 half-centuries. While he was revered for his Test skills, Tendulkar also excelled in the ODI format scoring 18,426 in 463 ODIs (most by any player), finishing with 49 centuries.

Tendulkar also created history by becoming the first-ever batter to score a double in ODIs against South Africa in 2009. After making his debut as a teenager in 1989, the former India captain decided to hang his boots in 2013, leaving behind a glorious legacy. In 2014, he was conferred with Bharat Ratna – India’s highest Civilian Award for his remarkable achievements in cricket.

With the latest honor of National Icon, Tendulkar’s glittering CV will be complete, to say the least. Not only the highest run scorer across formats, but Tendulkar also has played the most number of ODI World Cups – six of them. In his last WC in 2011, the legendary batter finally fulfilled his dream of winning a World Cup for India. Tendulkar described that moment as his best moment on the cricketing field.

In 2023, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) also built a life-size statue of a legendary cricketer in Wankhede Stadium. Now, with the National Icon honor, Tendulkar has certainly, ticked all the boxes on and off the field.
