India’s former no. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara weighs in on who should bat at no. 3 in Perth Test

Cheteshwar Pujara shared his thoughts on the No. 3 spot for India’s Test against Australia for the first Test of the series in Perth.

Ahead of the first Test match in Perth against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, India’s veteran cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara shared his thoughts on the batting order during a press conference in the Star Sports Press Room. Pujara, who was once India’s dependable No. 3 batter but is not part of the squad for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), spoke about the crucial position and his views on the players competing for it.

Pujara Prefers KL Rahul at No. 3

When asked about who should take up the No. 3 position in the batting order, Pujara expressed his preference for KL Rahul. He highlighted Rahul’s experience at the international level and his capability to handle the pressure that comes with batting at this key position.

“I don’t know the batting order, but I would prefer KL Rahul at No. 3. He has the experience to handle the pressure,” Pujara said, underlining Rahul’s suitability for the role.

Padikkal’s Left-hander advantage

Pujara also mentioned Devdutt Padikkal as a possible option for the No. 3 spot, particularly because of the left-right hand combination it would create. The left-right batting combination is often seen as beneficial in creating variety and making it difficult for the bowlers to settle into a rhythm.

“Padikkal might be at No. 3 due to the left-hand, right-hand combination,” Pujara added. “It will be easier for KL to bat at No. 3, but going by the left-right combo, it looks like Padikkal will be at No. 3.” he concluded.

There’s only one Pujara — Shastri

In the same event, India’s ex head coach Ravi Shastri said. “There’s only one Pujara, no one can replace him”. He emphasised that KL Rahul could play longer innings. “However, KL Rahul could play longer innings when required.”. he added.

Who will take the No. 3 spot in the first Test?

As the Indian team prepares for the high-stakes series, the No. 3 spot remains uncertain until and unless captain Rohit Sharma makes a comeback. While Rahul’s experience gives him the edge, Padikkal’s potential left-right combination could be a deciding factor. Fans and experts alike will be ready to see who eventually gets the nod for this important role.
