Indian youngsters who became household names in Week 1 of IPL 2025

The first round of matches in the IPL 2025 were headlined by superstars of Indian cricket, but then some youngsters deserve to be discussed more.

IPL 2025 started on March 22, and after the first round of matches, there have been a few exceptional performances by individuals, across teams. But it is not the time to talk about the Shreyas Iyers, Rishabh Pants or MS Dhonis of the world, but of recognising the future super stars. Some of the Indian players, who are relatively unknown, have made heads turn with their performances in their only matches this year.

InsideSport looks at the player performances:

Vignesh Puthur (M – 1, W – 3, Avg – 10.66, Eco – 8)

No one had a clue about Kerala boy Vignesh Puthur until he bowled his first ball in IPL 2025. On a day that was dominated by CSK, he was the lone bright spark for MI. He bagged the wickets of Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was batting on 53, followed by that of Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda. He has been training with MI for a few month now, and was a net bowler at the SA20 for Cape Town franchise. Watch out for him!

Viraj Nigam (M – 1, W – 1, R – 39, Strike-rate – 260)

In what turned out to be an epic chase vs LSG, no one expected Viraj Nigam to contribute so massively in it. When DC were 113/6 in 12.3 overs, this southpaw all-rounder came and blew away Rishabh Pant’s team. Although he had a bad day with the ball, where in two overs, he returned with figures of 1/35 in two overs, but he made up for it with 39 from 15 balls. He could be used, somewhat like Rahul Tewatia from the 2020/21 season for RR.

Ashutosh Sharma (M – 1, R – 66, Strike-rate – 212)

Ashutosh Sharma is not new on the IPL scene, but still a rising commodity in Indian cricket. Last year, he did play a few cameos for PBKS, but this year for DC, he just shot up his stocks to a different level. He scored 66 from just 31, in what seemed like an improbable chase for DC vs LSG. But in the last three/four overs, he just took the match away, and how. In the coming matches, he will be DCs main man for sure, lower down the order.

Priyansh Arya (M – 1, R – 47, Strike-rate – 204)

In a star-studded batting line-up, not many would have expected this Delhi lad to make it to the playing XI. But then he did, and showed why! He scored 47 from just 23 deliveries, and went hammer and tongs with his skipper Shreyas Iyer. He had an excellent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where in nine matches he scored 325 runs, at an average of 40, and a strike-rate of 176.
