The Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) are one of the oldest franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, despite participating in every season since 2008, the Capitals have yet to win the prestigious IPL trophy. After underwhelming results for five consecutive years, the team underwent a leadership change in 2018. The change proved to be a good one and produced great results. In the following six seasons, the Capitals made the playoffs three times (2019, 2020, and 2021), with a final appearance in 2020.

DC Short Bio

The Delhi Capitals were one of the best sides in the early years of the IPL. They finished fourth in the group stage in 2008 and first in 2009, making the semifinals in both editions. Things took a dramatic turn for the franchise from then on. In the next eight years, the Capital managed to qualify for the playoffs just once (2012).

Since their re-branding in 2018, the Capitals have pulled things back. They made three consecutive playoff appearances from 2019 to 2021, including a final in 2020, but their maiden IPL title still eludes them.

DC in IPL 2009:

Building on the success of the last season, the Capitals finished the group stage ranked first. Similar to last year, they eventually lost to the eventual winners, the Deccan Chargers, in the semifinal.

The first time they didn’t make the final four in the league. After winning and losing 7 matches each, they ended the group stage ranked 5th.

If the last season was mediocre, this was bad. Winning just 4 of their 14 matches, the Capitals ended the tournament dead last on the points table.

DC in IPL 2012:

After two bad years, they reverted to their old ways. After finishing first in the group stage, they lost to the Chennai Super Kings in the Qualifier II, missing out on the final berth once again.

In 2015, they made a slight improvement, if only by one position. With five wins in 14 matches, DC ended 7th.

DC in IPL 2018:

A franchise change, so no change in the team’s progression. From 6th, they ended the 2018 season dead last on the points table.

This proved to be the start of new beginnings for the franchise. Improving on last year’s embarrassing performance, the Capitals made it to the playoffs, only to lose to CSK in Qualifier II.

DC in IPL 2020:

Their best-ever season in the league’s history came in 2020. After ending second in the group stage, DC lost to MI in the Qualifier I. They returned to their winning ways and defeated SRH in the Qualifier II, only to lose to the Mumbai Indians in the Final.

DC in IPL 2021:

Their third year on the trot, reaching the playoffs. After topping the points table in the group stage, they lost two consecutive matches to CSK and KKR and bowed out of the event in Qualifier II.

DC in IPL 2022:

With three great years, everyone had high hopes for DC in 2022. But they followed their great 2021 with a middling season. With 7 wins and 7 losses each, they ended 5th on the points table.

DC in IPL 2023:

Without their permanent skipper, Rishabh Pant, DC struggled to get wins. Winning just 5 matches in 14 matches, they finished second from the bottom on the points table.
