Bio-bubble has been an integral part of cricket since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Teams are divided into small groups, known as ‘bubbles’, with restricted movement and no contact with the outside world. However, that could change soon as Times of India has reported that BCCI might not implement bio-bubble guidelines in two upcoming domestic events – the U19 Cooch Behar Trophy knockouts and the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy.

Both of these tournaments will commence on April 18 and teams are expected to reach the venues by April 15. However, they have been informed that there is no mandatory quarantine period to undergo and teams can start their practice sessions from the next day itself, that is, April 16.
“When the IPL schedule was drawn, the third wave was still on the wane. The board didn’t want to take any chances with a multi-city tournament. There’s a lot at stake. These two domestic tournaments could be a good reference to where we stand when it comes to dealing with the virus. One may expect that the three-team Women’s T20 Challenge during the IPL may also see the bubbles relaxing for the players,” a source was quoted saying.

Recently, the International Cricket Council (ICC) also opened up on their plans of returning to normalcy, but bio-bubble remains a reality in major tournaments as of now. In lieu of that, BCCI has also asked teams to follow ‘COVID-appropriate’ behaviour, even if the restrictions have been lifted. It has been informed that the players will be stationed at one particular allocation in the hotel, while they also have been told not to meet anyone except those who are a part of the competition.
