“Firstly, it is not possible to play back-to-back matches. You need to give them (all format players) enough break. I definitely fall in that as well. We have three T20Is against New Zealand. We will see what happens after IPL. I have not decided to give up the format,” said Rohit Sharma in his press conference.

In his press conference ahead of the IND vs SL 1st ODI, Rohit Sharma refuted claims about his international future. India’s all-format captain is under scrutiny following India’s T20 World Cup exit. With BCCI backing a full-fledged T20 reboot, the Hit-Man faces the sack, with Hardik primed to take over.

However, despite the reports, Rohit remains keen to continue in T20Is. When quizzed regarding the same,  he bluntly said, “I have not given up on T20 cricket.”

A decision on Rohit’s future in T20s will be out soon. The BCCI have entrusted the responsibility to the new Selection Committee led by Chetan Sharma. Alongside Rohit, the decision on other seniors – Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Mohammad Shami will be officially communicated by New Selection Committee.

InsideSport already has reported that the BCCI is looking to move on from Rohit and Virat in wake of the T20 World CUP in 2024. The selectors need to formalize the decision.

“Unfortunately, they won’t be picked or considered for NewZealand series. It’s not about they being dropped or anything, we feel we need to move and prepare the team for future. Finally, it is selectors who will have to take the decision & speak to the concerned”, confirmed a top BCCI official.

What is BCCI’s plan for India T20 Reboot?

  • Have a young team looking at a two-year span.
  • Rebuilding starts now under Hardik Pandya’s leadership.
  • The BCCI wants to have a core group of players for T20s like India have had for ODIs and Tests.
  • The squad for SriLanka T20 series has an average of 27.
  • The most experienced player in the squad is Hardik Pandya who has played 84 T20s.

“Every team has a short-term and long-term plan. ODI World Cup is our short-term plan. T20 WC is of course the long-term plan. The cycle has already begun. But we won’t get as many T20s this year to keep preparing for the WC. Instead, we have to look for opportunities where we can to prepare the team. If you look at the current squad, it’s the right mix. We only need experience in bowling. In two years, they will get there,” the official said.
