Powar, who took over as the head coach of the senior women’s team for the second time in May last year, was handed a two-year contract.

As per the India Today report, “Powar will continue to oversee the India women’s team even after the disappointing early exit from the World Cup. Mithali Raj’s side was knocked out from the showpiece event as early as the round-robin group stages.”

Last year, Powar was appointed as the head coach replacing former India opener WV Raman. The former Mumbai star was appointed after a selection process with a three-member Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Sulakshana Naik, Madan Lal and RP Singh conducting interviews.

Contrary to reports, Powar was handed a two-year deal and while the Women’s World Cup campaign ended in a disappointment, the BCCI are keen to give him and the team their backing.

“Yes, there was discussion and the team and the coaching department have been asked to strengthen the performance. Whatever possible facilities or tournaments are required will be given to them. For us (BCCI), both teams are equal. Yes, there was a bit of disappointment when they lost the South Africa game and had to leave the World Cup early but it is a game and winning and losing are part of the game,” a BCCI source told India Today.

Previously, PTI had reported that Ramesh Powar’s contract will be renewed with NCA chief VVS Laxman also taking a greater involvement in the sport. “Powar’s contract was till World Cup. There is no provision for extension. So the entire process starts with applications and interviews. Powar can certainly reapply and CAC as per the constitution, will take a call,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
