Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has drawn a parallel between India head coach Gautam Gambhir and Pakistan coach for Tests Jason Gillespie. His remark on his ex-Australia teammate comes ahead of the latter’s first assignment – the PAK vs BAN Test series. Ponting said that Gillespie was a bit like Gambhir and heaped praise on his record as a coach in the past.
India vs Pakistan: Ponting compares Gambhir to Gillespie
“Jason Gillespie is a bit like Gambhir. Pretty much everywhere he has been, his coaching record has been very very good. He will have some challenges I got no doubt about it. But he is a deep thinker and as I said, a quiet person that goes about it in his own way,” Ponting said.
‘Not surprised with changes’
Ponting also backed the changes brought to the Pakistan cricket setup after their miserable T20 World Cup campaign. As a part of the PCB’s revamp, many former cricketers were removed from their positions in the selection committee following Babar Azam and co’s exit from the T20 WC following the group stage.
“And look, to be honest, I am not surprised at all by the amount of changes in that group. I know it is a different format but they had a very disappointing T20 World Cup. If you are not willing to make some changes, you’re expecting similar results to come your way,” Ponting added.
PAK vs BAN Tests
Shan Masood will lead the side against Bangladesh in a two-match Test series that will begin from August 21. Saud Shakeel will be his deputy. The tournament marks the start of what will be a hectic international calendar for the side. Jason Gillespie faces a steep challenge in attempting to take Pakistan to the WTC finals, given the challenges posed within and outside the team.
