PCB chief Ramiz Raja threatened to boycott the 2023 World Cup, should India not travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. While the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) awarded the hosting rights to Pakistan, ACC chief and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah lit the flame saying that the Indian would not travel to Pakistan.

Speaking to Urdu News, Ramiz said, “If Pakistan doesn’t take part in the World Cup scheduled in India next year, who will watch it? We have a clear stand: If the Indian team comes here then we will go for the World Cup. If they don’t come then they can play the World Cup without us.”

Jay Shah’s statement irked PCB and Ramiz Raja convened an emergency meeting with the ACC. He followed it up with a threat to boycott the ICC World Cup 2023, set to be hosted by India next year. Additionally, Raja threw further shade at India. The former commentator said that Babar Azam-led team had defeated India’s billion-dollar team twice in a year.

“We will adopt an aggressive approach. Our team is showing performance. I’ve always said we need to improve the economy of Pakistan cricket, and that can only happen when we perform well. In the 2021 T20 World Cup, we beat India. We beat India in the T20 Asia Cup. In one year, the Pakistan cricket team defeated a billion-dollar economy team twice,” Raja added.

Pakistan last hosted a multi-nation event back in 2008. After a long hiatus, the PCB brought cricket back to Pakistan with SriLanka, Australia and England all touring in recent months. Incidentally,  India last played travelled to Pakistan was during the Asia Cup 2008. The BCCI did host Pakistan for a bilateral series in 2012.

However, since then the two teams have only met at ACC and ICC events. Meanwhile, the BCCI maintains its stance on playing the Asia Cup at a neutral venue. New president Roger Binny revealed that the Indian team will need government clearance to travel to Pakistan.

“That is not BCCI’s call. We need the government’s clearance to leave the country. Whether we leave the country or teams coming into the country, we need clearance. Once we get clearance from the government then we go with it. We can’t make decision on our own. We have to rely on the government. We have not approached them yet,” said World Cup winner Binny as quoted by PTI.
