Alarm bells for India! Ben Stokes to resume bowling

Stokes' absence on the bowling front has seen him drop below Joe Root in the ICC's Test all-rounder rankings, adding a layer of complexity to England's strategic decisions.

England captain Ben Stokes faces a crucial step in his comeback journey as he prepares to tentatively resume bowling during Thursday’s training session ahead of India vs England 2nd Test in Vizag. However, his absence on the bowling front has seen him drop below Joe Root in the ICC’s Test all-rounder rankings, adding a layer of complexity to England’s strategic decisions.

While Ben Stokes hasn’t bowled competitively since June and underwent knee surgery, his impressive batting performance and pain-free experience in the first Test offer promising signs. He emphasizes, “There are no issues whatsoever,” highlighting his commitment to regaining bowling fitness as per The Telegraph.

Despite not bowling in this India tour, Ben Stokes has his sights set on a full-fledged return as an all-rounder by the summer. He acknowledges the difficulty of not bowling but remains committed to the “back to bowling programme” for the future.

However, his limited bowling appearances in recent months raise questions about his immediate availability. While he confirms bowling during training, he clarifies, “It will be very minimal… I don’t want to do myself any damage.” This cautious approach underscores the team’s focus on managing his recovery strategically.

Interestingly, Ben Stokes believes his knee issues hindered his performance last year, making his stunning run-out of Ravindra Jadeja in Hyderabad unlikely at that time. His improved mobility is a positive outcome of the surgery and rehabilitation.

With the second Test looming, the key question remains: will Ben Stokes bowl? His ranking drop to Root further complicates the decision. While his batting prowess is invaluable, his all-rounder abilities could significantly bolster England’s chances.

Ultimately, the call will depend on a careful assessment of Stokes’ fitness and the team’s strategic needs. Whether he takes the field with ball in hand or focuses solely on batting, his presence remains a powerful force for England as they strive to maintain their winning momentum in India.
