Ajinkya Rahane suffered a Grade III hamstring injury during Kolkata Knight Riders match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 14. He was ruled out of the IPL immediately. Now, he has been ruled out from the Ranji Trophy knockouts and the England tour in July.

As per a Sportstar report, Rahane is expected to be out for at least 8-10 weeks. It comes as a blow for him, especially after being dropped from India’s squad for Sri Lanka series.

The only shot at his return to Team India will be Ranji Trophy 2022-23 or through County cricket if he manages to get a deal after recovery. After the one-off Test against England, India’s next Test assignment will be against Bangladesh in November before the Test series at home against Australia.

But considering the next edition of the Ranji Trophy will be held only in December-January, Rahane’s return to Team India is doubtful this year.

Rahane left the Kolkata Knight Riders camp earlier this week soon after scans revealed a tendon tear in his left hamstring. He suffered the injury while batting against Sunrisers in Pune on May 14.

India Tour of England: Will Rahane be able to return to Team India?

  • Considering his poor returns with the willow and the youngsters taking his place, Rahane’s return to Team India is doubtful.
  • Rahane had an average Ranji Trophy campaign where he scored 185 runs in four innings.
  • His knocks included a century, a half-century and couple of ducks.
  • In the IPL 2022, he started with a half-century but soon faded away, managing just 133 runs in 7 innings at an average of 19.00 and a poor strike rate of 103.90.
  • He is on the potential list to be released ahead of IPL 2023.

As for team selection for the England series, the selectors along with captain Rohit Sharma, BCCI secretary Jay Shah and head coach Rahul Dravid are meeting today in Mumbai. The squad for South Africa series, Ireland tour and England tour will be announced within next 24 hours.
