India Squad NZ Series: India vs NewZealand LIVE – India finally have five selectors available for squad selection. In fact, this is the first time since T20 World Cup 2021 that a five-member selection committee will pick the squad for a series. With BCCI finally announcing Chetan Sharma-led selection committee, their first task will be to pick the squad for the ODI and T20 series against NewZealand. A BCCI official confirmed to InsideSport that the squad will be announced either on Monday or Tuesday. However, both Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli will not be in T20 squad. Follow IND vs NZ LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.

“That was the plan. That is why we finished the process this week. Chetan and his team will pick the squad for the NewZealand series. The ODI squad won’t change much from the SriLanka series. But it is up to the selectors to experiment with the T20 squad,” a BCCI official told InsideSport.

  • Shiv Sundar Das (Tests: 23, ODIs: 4, T20s: 3)
  • Subroto Banerjee (Tests: 1, ODIs: 6, First Class: 59)
  • Salil Ankola (Tests: 1, ODIs: 20, First Class: 54)
  • Sridharan Sharath (First Class: 139, List A: 116)

Chetan Sharma who was sacked a month ago following India’s disappointing exit from T20 World Cup is back as the chairman. However, the two years he has left in his tenure as the selector, he has to make some big calls. It will start with phasing out senior players from T20 team.

India Squad NZ T20 Series: Right after the ongoing series vs SriLanka, India will play 3 match ODI & T20 Series vs NewZealand. Rohit, Virat will play the Kiwis in ODI Series but won’t be part of T20 Series starting from 27th January.

InsideSport understands that both Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli besides Ravichandra Ashwin and Mohammad Shami will not be considered for T20s. KL Rahul is also unlikely for the T20 team. Instead, domestic performance will be rewarded.

Like the core group in ODIs, BCCI wants to create a core group for T20 team and only make addition and substractions based on the demand of the squad.

“Every team has a short-term and long-term plan. ODI World Cup is our short-term plan. T20 WC is of course the long-term plan. The cycle has already begun. But we won’t get as many T20s this year to keep preparing for the WC. Instead, we have to look for opportunities where we can to prepare the team. If you look at the current squad, it’s the right mix. We only need experience in bowling. In two years, they will get there,” the official said.

What is BCCI’s plan for India T20 Reboot?

  • Have a young team looking at a two-year span.
  • Rebuilding starts now under Hardik Pandya’s leadership.
  • The BCCI wants to have a core group of players for T20s like India have had for ODIs and Tests.
  • The squad for SriLanka T20 series has an average of 27.
  • The most experienced player in the squad is Hardik Pandya who has played 84 T20s.

5 BIG Decisions New Selection Committee will have to take:

Decision 1: Appoint Hardik Pandya as permanent T20 skipper: Hardik Pandya has taken over the reins of Indian cricket in T20s. The team bears a fresh look of youngsters with no baggage. Suryakumar Yadav has been named the vice-captain. The official announcement of Hardik Pandya as India’s T20 captain is yet to be made. But it looks like a mere formality now. If this happens, then this will be the first time Indian cricket will officially adopt a split captaincy. Rohit Sharma is in charge of the Test and ODI sides.

Decision Number 2: Phasing out seniors from T20I side – The indications were there when the outgoing national selectors opted to draft in young blood for home series against SriLanka. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravi Ashwin, Dinesh Karthik, Mohammad Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were all left out of the T20 squad. The new committee will now make it official.

Decision Number 3: Shortlisting players for T20 World Cup 2024: Soon after Team India was ousted by England at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, there were talks about an overhaul of the Indian cricket team in T20Is. Like the ODI World Cup, selectors will make a shortlist of 20-25 players for T20 World Cup 2024.

Decision Number 4: Captaincy Succession: Rohit Sharma will stay on as the Test and ODI captain until World Cup 2023. But who will succeed him after that considering he is already 35? While Hardik Pandya is likely in ODIs, KL Rahul has a foot in front in Test. But selectors will need to take a call with Rishabh Pant also in contention.

Decision 5: Rahul Dravid’s future as a coach: Rahul Dravid’s tenure ends after 2023 WC. Since India’s semifinal exit from the T20 World Cup in Australia, everyone’s attention has been focused on head coach Rahul Dravid. Not many are happy with methods for playing modern-day T20 cricket. But if he fails to secure the ODI World Cup, the axe is likely to fall on him as well. VVS Laxman is the current favourite. But selectors will have a say in the succession plan of Dravid.
