The India squad for the Bangladesh Test series is out hours after the end of the first round of the Duleep Trophy. And to everyone’s surprise, Jasprit Bumrah is back in the squad, ending his break. But as expected, Virat Kohli, who missed the England Tests, has returned and so has Rishabh Pant after almost two years. Left-arm seamer Yash Dayal has got a surprise call-up for IND vs BAN 1st Test in Chennai after an impressive Duleep Trophy match. India’s squad for the 2nd Test will be announced later.
Jasprit Bumrah was expected to rest for one more series before returning in the IND vs NZ Test series next month. However, selectors have cut his break short. The pacer also missed the Duleep Trophy match.
India squad for Bangladesh Tests
Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), R Ashwin, R Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Yash Dayal.
Rishabh Pant returns
India’s hero of the historic win at Gabba Rishabh Pant is back for the IND vs BAN Test series. India’s No 1 wicketkeeper-batter has been out of red-ball cricket since his near-fatal car crash in December 2022. With another Border Gavaskar Trophy approaching, Pant is back to get his red-ball rhythm back in the India vs Bangladesh series.
In the Duleep Trophy match, Rishabh Pant was at his best. He was quick behind the stumps and was effortless in the 2nd innings, scoring 47-ball 61.
Virat Kohli back in IND vs BAN Test
After missing the entire IND vs ENG Test series owing to the birth of his son Akay Kohli, Virat will make a return to the Test side after eight months.
A run machine till 2019, Kohli hasn’t had the best of time in Test cricket post that. Since the pandemic break, Kohli has averaged just 35.58 including two centuries in Tests. He also struggled in the T20 World Cup barring the knock in the final.
Now that India are preparing for another WTC Final, they need Virat Kohli to fire in the IND vs BAN series with 10 Test matches coming up. After skipping the Duleep Trophy, this will be his best chance to gear up for the Test campaign.
Maiden call-up for Yash Dayal
From his IPL nightmare in 2023 to getting dropped from Gujarat Titans Playing XI, Yash Dayal went through a lot. But this is the rise of Yash Dayal. The left-arm pacer was hammered by Rinku Singh in IPL 2023, conceding five sixes in a row. But after switching to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he found his rhythm back in 2024.
In the Duleep Trophy match in Bengaluru, he continued to shine, bagging four wickets in the match.
