INDIA ODI World CUP: Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar was never fond of taking a break while playing for the country during his playing days, unlike today. He has similar advice for the current Team India management. India is currently in New Zealand, with several senior cricketers like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and others opting for rest. With the seniors taking a break, it provides an opportunity for the players on the bench to showcase their talent.

However, Gavaskar feels that too much chopping and changing and uncertainty can be harmful for the team’s cause. The Indian batting legend, wants the team management to have a settle plan for batters moving into the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup at home.

The batting more or less takes care of itself but it’s also important that with less than a year left, there are no rest periods and they bat together as much as possible to be able to generate even better understanding between themselves.” Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar has advised the team management against taking breaks for batters in order to allow them to play together for extended periods of time. This, according to the batting legend, will benefit the team in the long run.

In limited overs, batting partnerships require batters to have confidence in each other’s judgement and that can only come about when they play regularly with each other,” Gavaskar added

Sunil Gavaskar has come down heavily on the team management to take constant breaks from duties.

On the current tour to New Zealand, the team management has decided to chop and change players on a regular basis. The intention is to keep the players fresh, given the cramped international schedule. Not just the players but also the coaching staff have been swapping duties from time to time.

Former head coach Ravi Shastri had already taken a potshot at head coach Rahul Dravid, for taking too many breaks.

“I don’t believe in breaks. I want to understand my team and players, and then be in control of that team. What do you need that many breaks for, to be honest?,” Shastri said.

Indian cricket has adopted the “BREAK” strategy for over a year now, or to be more specific, since the post-Covid-19 era.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have served Indian cricket for over a decade.

However, the same strategy misfired in the ICC men’s T20 World Cup. India lost to England in the semi-final in Adelaide, and a major reason was the failure of the opening pair of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma. Both of these players looked out of sync, and India had to pay the price.

With the selectors having so many options at their disposal to choose from, it is imperative that the ones who are selected to play for the national cricket team get an extended run to prove their mettle.

Giving a chance to a talented guy when the seniors are on a break and later dropping them despite their performance might hamper the youngster’s confidence.

Gavaskar doesn’t want India to repeat the same mistakes going into the 50-over-World Cup at home. India last won an ICC tournament in 2013, and the last time they held on to a 50-over World Cup was in 2011 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.

Is the “Problem of Plenty” proving to be a real problem for Indian cricket? Maybe it is high time the team management takes Gavaskar’s advice and settles things down rather than further confusing them, both for the cricketers and the fans who love this game.
