India ODI Squad SA: With Hardik Pandya not in contention and Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel also likely to remain unavailable, the All India Selection Committee has a tough task on hand when they name India’s squad for the ODI series vs South Africa. With a serious dearth in all-rounders, the selectors led by Chetan Sharma, will be deliberating on two names, Rishi Dhawan and Venkatesh Iyer, both of who performed admirably in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Venkatesh Iyer has enjoyed a stellar 2021, where he led Kolkata Knight Riders to the final smashing 370 runs in just 10 games at the top of the order. Venkatesh, who plays for Madhya Pradesh, followed it up with impressive performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy and is being looked up as a potential backup to Hardik Pandya.
Venkatesh Iyer also made his debut for India in the home series against New Zealand but did not have enough chances to make his mark. Iyer became only the seventh player in the history of List A cricket with a 150-plus score while batting at No.6 or lower and the first to do so in Vijay Hazare Trophy.

While Rishi Dhawan has the better numbers to boast in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Himachal Pradesh all-rounder has been in the shadows for the past five years, having last been part of the IPL in 2017 with the Kolkata Knight Riders. Iyer meanwhile is the younger and more explosive option and has recently had some big experience with the IPL and his India debut. Dhawan has previously shared the dressing room with Indian captain Rohit Sharma at Mumbai Indians, and it remains to be seen who the selectors will back for the first overseas tour under the Hit-Man’s leadership.
