Team India will see new leaders at the helm with Kl Rahul appointed captain and Jasprit Bumrah named his deputy for the ODI series against South Africa. The Mumbai Indians star has been one of the top performers for India over the years, spearheading the pace attack in all formats of the game. Jasprit Bumrah made his ODI debut in 2016 and has featured in 67 ODIs, picking 108 wickets at a stellar average of 25.33.

The 28-year-old is the second fastest to 100 ODI wickets by an Indian pacer, having achieved the record during the 2019 Cricket World Cup. Bumrah is considered one of the fastest Indian bowlers with an average speed of 142 km/h, his fastest being 153.26 km/h, which he bowled during the first Test match of India Tour of Australia 2018, at the Adelaide Oval, outpacing Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.

Jasprit Bumrah’s ascent to vice-captaincy was unpredicted, but former Indian players have previously backed him to don the leadership role if required. Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja, in interaction with Cricbuzz, had suggested that Bumrah’s understanding of the white-ball game should make him one of the prime contenders to become captain.

Ajay Jadeja said, “He always plays white-ball cricket. And the qualities required to be a captain [like] understanding the game – he does it the best there’s no doubt about that… If you are thinking about the future and going out of the box, then he has the mind to be the captain. It’s possible to look at him as the next Indian captain because, for it, you have to be a certainty in the team and have an understanding of the game.”

Speaking after Virat Kohli had stepped down from captaincy, Former India pacer and 2011 World Cup winner Ashish Nehra had said, “After Rohit Sharma, we are hearing the names of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul [as contenders]. Rishabh Pant has traveled around the world but has also carried drinks and has even been left out of the team before. ”

He added, “KL Rahul returned to Test cricket because Mayank Agarwal was injured… So Jasprit Bumrah can be an option too. As Ajay [Jadeja] said, he’s sturdy, a certainty in the team, and is always in the XI for all formats. It’s nowhere written in the rule book that fast bowlers can’t be captains.”
