What is DEXA Test?

DEXA or Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is a scientific method in which the Bone Mineral Density of a person is determined using a special technique known as spectral imaging. Like other imaging methods (X-Ray or MRI), in this case, two X-Ray beams at different energy levels are directed toward the bone of the person. And accordingly, it reveals a chart with the current bone density and the mineral content of the bone for the person/player as in the case.

Why is DEXA test Important for Injured Players making a Return?

To understand why the DEXA Test is important for injured players aiming to make a return to the Indian National team we need to understand why the DEXA Test is important and what are its uses.

To put it in layman’s terms, the DEXA Test is used to determine the bone strength and bone mineral density of a patient/player. When it comes to injured players, the dynamics are changed. Players and athletes in general have better bone mineral density in comparison to normal humans.

However, bone strength and mineral density take a huge hit when players are injured. When players keep themselves involved in training they remain fitter and have good bone health. However, this thing is hampered when a player undergoes recovery and rehabilitation. Therefore the BCCI wants to keep a check on this fact.

This in turn has a great benefit. It will act as a precautionary step for injured players making a return to the team to not incur a fresh injury. It is quite common in the world of sports when a player making a return from injury gets injured in the first match that he takes part in. This DEXA Test will provide substantial information to avoid such scenarios.

Workload management has been a key area for the BCCI. With the advancement in Sports Science and new techniques developing every day, the field of Sports Science and Injury Management has crossed new boundaries. The apex cricket body of India has been a first-hand witness to various key Indian players missing major tournaments on account of injuries.

The major stop-and-go test aka the Yo-Yo Test makes its way back. The BCCI has now made it mandatory for players to undergo and pass the Yo-Yo Test before they can make their way into the team. Apart from this and the crucial DEXA Test, the final call on the fitness standards of the player will remain under the authority of the NCA.

Based in Bengaluru, the National Cricket Academy will have the final call as to which players make the cut for the Indian National Cricket team as confirmed by Jay Shah, the Secretary of the BCCI. The NCA has also got the slack after a wide list of players were rendered injured throughout the season despite playing minimal cricket in the season. What makes it even more astonishing is that the injured players underwent their rehab program at NCA.

Therefore the issues of player availability, workload management, and fitness parameters were discussed at length during the meeting along with the roadmap to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. BCCI has shortlisted 20 players for the World Cup 2023 in October. To safeguard the players, BCCI has asked the NCA to work with IPL teams on workload management.

The meeting was attended by BCCI president Roger Binny, honorary secretary Jay Shah, captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid, head of cricket (NCA) VVS Laxman and chairman of senior men selection committee Chetan Sharma, whose panel was sacked in November.

Key recommendations –

  • The emerging players will have to play a substantial domestic season to be eligible for selection to the national team.
  • The Yo-Yo Test and Dexa will now be part of selection criteria and implemented in the customized roadmaps of the central pool of players.
  • Keeping in mind the Men’s FTP and preparations for ICC CWC 2023, the NCA will work in tandem with the IPL Franchisee to monitor the targeted Indian players participating in the IPL 2023.
