India Cricket Overhaul: India Split Captaincy – Rohit Sharma’s one of the closest friends in Indian Cricket Team, Dinesh Karthik has backed split captaincy. The former Indian keeper-batter has claimed that Rohit Sharma could lose his captaincy if India do not win World Cup 2023. Instead, BCCI will take an official split captaincy approach, handing over white-ball reins to Hardik Pandya. InsideSport already reported that Rohi could quit one or two formats completely after ODI World Cup to prolong his career. KL Rahul is frontrunner to take charge of the Test team. Rohit will be back for India vs Australia Test series. Follow IND vs AUS LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.

“If the case presents itself, why not? (On split captaincy) But right now, it is not right for me to say for two reasons. One, India are only playing three T20s after this until the 2023 World Cup, they face the West Indies after the IPL. Once that tournament is done, I think we will know exactly where things stand,” Dinesh Karthik told Cricbuzz.

Despite handing over charge of T20 team and sort of banishing all seniors from the T20 team, BCCI or the selectors have not made an official announcement. But the BCCI has already set succession plans in motion after Rohit Sharma. Dinesh Karthik believes if the ODI World Cup doesn’t go India’s way, BCCI will make it official.

“If Rohit Sharma’s team doesn’t go on to do something special there, we could very well see a chance of split captaincy. I guess the opportunity will present itself at that point of time. Whereas if Rohit goes on to achieve something special, we will all like to think differently and give him a crack at the 2024 T20 World Cup if he himself is willing to play that,” Karthik added.

India Cricket Overhaul after World Cup?

  • The overhaul is underway, albeit silently.
  • BCCI has moved Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and all senior players away from T20s to focus on ODIs and Tests.
  • With World Cup 2023, one cycle will end.
  • As Rohit will turn 36 by then, he will be in the twilight of cricketing career.
  • Rohit is likely to take a call on his career and could vacate his spot in the ODI team.
  • Hence, BCCI will have to look for options.
  • Hardik Pandya is back to his peak fitness and in him, India have found a real option for white-ball captaincy.
  • Instead of one captain for all formats, BCCI is going back to the split captaincy option that existed before Virat Kohli took charge.
  • Even though selectors did not agree at that time, scheduling and workload management have made it almost impossible for a player to play all three formats with the same intensity.
  • As Hardik has already taken charge of the T20 team, he will succeed Rohit Sharma in ODIs.

“For the moment, I do believe that Hardik has done a phenomenal job. He lives for the big games. After Virat Kohli, if I have seen somebody who wants those big games, it is Hardik Pandya. You would have to put Bumrah in that list as well. As a batter Hardik Pandya loves those big occasions,” Dinesh Karthik said.

A senior BCCI official earlier hinted that Rohit could take a call on his playing career after the World Cup. Rohit is already 36 and is in twilight of his career.

“Of course, there is always a succession plan. But it’s not the time to talk about future captaincy. Rohit is our captain and anything after that will be discussed after World Cup. Rohit may take a call on his future after the World Cup. Hardik has been given the vice-captaincy of ODIs with the idea that he can take charge in future,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.
