India cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir pulled up the team for being over dependent on one player following the loss in IND vs AUS 5th Test. With the 6-wickt defeat at Sydney, India conceded the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia for the first time in 10 years. Bumrah, who was India’s leading wicket-taker in the series, was the standout performer for the Men in Blue while the rest of the line-up remained inconsistent.
“Team can’t be dependent” on Bumrah: Gambhir
Speaking at a press conference after the IND vs AUS 5th Test, Gambhir claimed that he wouldn’t want to say that India lost the match because Bumrah was off the field on Day 3. The Indian captain was forced to stay off the field since the second session on Day 2 after suffering a back spasm. While he underwent scans on the same day and returned to the dressing room, he did not bowl on Day 3 when Australia eventually chased down the target.
“I don’t want to say because Jasprit Bumrah wasn’t there we lost. We had our moments. Yes we didn’t get the results, we lost the series. Team cannot be dependent on one player,” Gambhir said.

Bumrah has not only been the leading wicket-taker for India but has also been the most overworked bowler. He bowled 151.2 overs in BGT 2024-25, picking up 32 wickets in the series. While his partner Siraj is the second on the list, he falls behind by a huge margin, showing how much the Indian team depended on Bumrah in the tour. Every time India found themselves in a tricky situation, be it in all 5 Tests, it was always Bumrah who provided the breakthrough.
