“It’s good to be back in Chennai after a long time. The City has given me so much that it feels like home. I wanted to practice here before going to Zimbabwe. I wanted real match practice here and up north it gets difficult in the rain. It is not possible to go away and give your 100% when you are back from an injury. You need to take one step at a time and build on the momentum,” said Chahar.

Chahar feels that Chennai is like his hometown and always feels good here. Chahar continued his recovery ahead of the Zimbabwe tour to achieve his match fitness. The all-rounder who is keen to finish games is not willing to shy away from opportunities as far as batting is concerned.

“My mindset has always been the same. If I get an opportunity to bat I will bat and try to win the match. I play at No.8 and in that position you don’t have enough support down below. It is my job to finish the game because there is no one below me who can take that responsibility. It is hard taking that pressure all the time but people remember you as a hero,” he added.

“Those 5 months were very difficult. First I had a grade 3 quadriceps tear then I got my wisdom tooth removal surgery. These were followed by a stress fracture in my back which took 8 weeks and had to start my rehab again. I was midway through my rehab when the back injury happened and thus I had to start rehab from the scratch again. From the very beginning, it has always been my dream to play the world cup for India and win matches for the country,” Deepak Chahar concluded.

Deepak Chahar has been kept as a backup option in the Asia Cup squad. If he performs well in Zimbabwe he can replace Avesh Khan for the Asia Cup. His selection in the India team for the T20 World Cup will be accountable for how he performs in the Asia Cup.
