Virat Kohli has not let his sacking as captain deter him on the field with the former Indian skipper being a positive influence on Sunday in Ahmedabad. Kohli was one of the close in fielders after Yuzvendra Chahal was brought into the attack and advised the leg-spinner to bowl the wrong ‘un, which led to the dismissal of West Indies captain Kieron Pollard first ball.
He later followed it up with a perfect summation of the situation after India appealed for a caught behind with Shamarh Brooks’ caught behind given not out by the umpire. Kohli convinced Rohit Sharma and Co. to take the review and as it turned out, his decision proved to be right and India bagged their 6th of the night. Watch the video here:

Kohli has certainly taken a page out of MS Dhoni’s book, who remained an influential figure in the side despite handing over the reins to Kohli in 2017. Dhoni was particulary adept in working the spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in the middle overs, and helped out then captain Kohli with field placements and DRS calls, as the latter has now done for Rohit Sharma on Sunday.
India did need some DRS expertise in Ahmedabad, with the umpire making three dubious calls, all of which were overturned by the third umpire. At first, Darren Bravo was given not out after Washington Sundar was trapped in front. Later, Rohit again called it right to overturn another LBW call, with Chahal this time hitting the pads after Nicholas Pooran missed a straightforward sweep, which would have crashed into the stumps. Later, Virat Kohli convinced Rohit to take the DRS again, which led to Shamarh Brooks’ downfall.
Rohit’s prowess with the DRS prompted former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar to draw parallels with MS Dhoni again, who generally got most calls right. During the commentary, Gavaskar said, “Rohit Sharma got those reviews spot on. Earlier when Dhoni used to get more right than wrong, it was called as Dhoni Review System. Now you can term it as ‘Definitely Rohit System’.”
