But it was Yuzvendra Chahal who broke the stand. He took advantage of the rough and it turned a bit. Hope tried to step out but a clever stumping from Sanju Samson sent him back. West Indies could never recover from that. Brandon King was the next to depart and it was Axar Patel, who cleaned him up.

West Indies pinned their hopes on Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder. While the two started cautiously and then Pooran took on, smashing Prasidh Krishna for 17 runs. But a mistimed shot ended Pooran’s knock. Holder too ran out of partners as Yuzvendra Chahal ran through the lower order to bowl West Indies out for 137 runs.

Earlier, opting to bat, India started slowly with just 45 runs coming from the first 10 overs. But Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill accelerated a bit. The two took India to 113 before Shikhar Dhawan fell for 58.

But that’s when rain interrupted the match for the first time. India resumed brilliantly after the first rain break with Shreyas Iyer and Shubman taking on West Indies bowling attack. The two added 86 runs from just 58 balls. But Akeal Hosein denied Shreyas Iyer his 4th consecutive half-century against West Indies. His brilliant 44-run knock ended. Soon, Hayden Walsh Jr dismissed Suryakumar Yadav.

But it was Shubman Gill who would be left heartbroken. The young opener, making a comeback to the ODI side after 16 months was batting on 98 when the rain interrupted the match once again. As the cut-off time passed, he was left stranded on 98, missing out on his maiden international century. India’s innings had to end prematurely on 225/3 in 34 overs.

“I was hoping to get a hundred, but that (rain) was not under my control. I was telling myself that give me just one over. But then the rain came. I was very disappointed with how I got out in the first two ODIs. I tried to play according to the ball and let my instincts take over. But I am happy with my performances,” Shubman Gill said after the match.
