IND vs WI gets spicier! Holder & Alzarri to return early from ODI WC qualifier

Holder contributed with both the bat and the ball during the WC Qualifier in Zimbabwe, scoring 144 runs from five innings at an average of 36 and taking six wickets at a 35.33 average. Meanwhile, Joseph has been their most effective bowler, taking eight wickets in his first five matches at an average of 32.11.

In order to keep them fresh for the month-long, all-format series against India (IND vs WI) at home in July-August, Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph will leave the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 qualifier in Zimbabwe early.

Desmond Haynes, the head selector for the West Indies men’s team, stated in a statement that Jason and Alzarri are two of the nation’s top bowlers across all formats.

“We have a busy itinerary for the next series against India, which will mark the start of the new ICC World Test Championship. Following our discussion, it was decided that having two of our top bowlers return early from Zimbabwe is the wisest course of action right now,” Haynes stated.

Legspinner Yannic Cariah had previously withdrawn from the competition due to a facial injury sustained during practise that necessitated surgery. Only 13 players remain on the roster after Holder and Joseph’s return, and no replacements have yet been announced.

The first of the two Test matches in the series versus India (IND vs WI) will take place in Roseau on July 12; the second Test will begin in Port of Spain on July 20. Three ODIs and five T20Is will follow, with the final one taking place on August 13 in Lauderhill, Florida, USA.

West Indies’ chances of making it to the ODI World Cup, which will be held in India in October-November, were destroyed after they lost to Scotland in a Super Six match in the qualifying competition in Harare on July 1. The ODI World Cup without them will be the first ever.

On July 5 and July 7, respectively, they still have games against Oman, who is also out of the running for qualification, and Sri Lanka, who is already qualified.

Holder and Joseph are anticipated to play significant roles in the West Indies lineups, which have not yet been announced for the series against India.

Holder contributed with both the bat and the ball during the Zimbabwe competition, scoring 144 runs from five innings at an average of 36 and taking six wickets at a 35.33 average. Meanwhile, Joseph has been their most effective bowler, taking eight wickets in his first five matches at an average of 32.11.
