IND vs WI 1st ODI: India Tour of West Indies – West Indies have been in a horrible run of form in ODI cricket since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. The Caribbean side has lost a whopping nine ODI series out of 13 that they have played. Worst, they were recently whitewashed by Bangladesh in their own backyard. The Nicholas Pooran-led side will now be up against in-form India. Considering their recent form, the task seems insurmountable. West Indies coach Phil Simmons is optimistic and says, “West Indies can challenge India.” Follow IND vs WI Live Updates with InsideSport.IN.

“The main thing is how we bat our 50 overs…we have to bat 50 overs and put our innings together and partnerships together,” Simmons said two days out of the ODI series opener against India in Port-of-Spain. “Somebody has to be looking to score a hundred and hold the team together. Batting-wise that is it.”

IND vs WI 1st ODI: Phil Simmons puts faith on the batters to deliver the goods against India

In the recent three-match ODI series against Bangladesh, West Indies could not even cross 200 once. No batter could take the onus to bat long. The horrendous batting display resulted in West Indies’ ninth defeat in the 13 ODI series. West Indies have also batted 50 overs just on six occasions out of 39 innings. Simmons though has put his faith in the batters to deliver the goods. The West Indies coach also feels the pitches had something to do against the Bangladesh series.

“I can’t look past the batters here yet,” Simmons said. “I think you judge people on good wickets. We had good performances in Netherlands and good performances in Pakistan. You come [home] and you get indifferent wickets where guys have to fight for runs and we agree that we should’ve fought a little harder, but I can’t come down [on them]. Let’s see what happens. These wickets [at Queen’s Park Oval] look really good and let’s see how they play and we can judge them from this.”
