IND vs WI 1st ODI: Rohit Sharma’s THUMBS UP for KULCHA, says ‘will get them together very soon’ Kuldeep unlikely to play 1st ODI

Team India is set to play three ODIs at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad from February 6 followed by the T20I series at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata from February 16. Rohit was supposed to lead the side in the ODIs against South Africa, but a hamstring issue ruled him out, however, he has regained his fitness and is ready to lead the Men in Blue.

“Kuldeep and Chahal have been great performers for us in the past and they have created an impact in those years whenever they have played together, in the middle they were left out because of the combination we wanted to get. It is certainly on my mind to get them back together, Kuldeep especially,” said Rohit during a virtual press conference.

“We want to get Kuldeep in slowly, we do not want him to be rushed. It is important to give him some time to come into his own groove, we do not want to put him in a situation where we are asking too much from him also. I think for us, it is important that we handle the situation carefully. Both these players are important. Chahal played in South Africa and Kuldeep has just gotten back into the squad. Kuldeep needs to play a lot of games to get his rhythm back and we understand that,” he added.

  • Yuzvendra Chahal will have to deliver big-time ahead of failure in South Africa ODIs. He managed to scalp just 2 wickets in 3 ODIs as India suffered 0-3 drubbing by Proteas.
  • He is just one wicket short of completing 100 scalps in ODIs during his 60th ODI outing for India.
  • Kuldeep Yadav is expected to come in India’s Playing XI as R Ashwin & R Jadeja and Axar Patel are unavailable. He is an experienced player but have fallen out of favours in the last few months. The 27-year-old comes with an experience of 107 wickets from 65 ODIs.
  • He is still facing stiff competition with Washington Sundar & Ravi Bishnoi but could play if Team India management opts for 3 spinners in subcontinent conditions.
  • The duo were mainstay spin options from 2017 to 2019 in ODIs but fell out of contention ahead of 2019 World Cup and management backed finger spinners. They have a decent economy rate of just over 5 rpo.

Bharat Arun elated with Kuldeep Yadav’s return-

Earlier, former bowling coach Bharat Arun said he is very happy with the return of Kuldeep Yadav to the squad.

“I feel it is a very encouraging move that they have called up Ravi Bishnoi and brought back Kuldeep Yadav. Kuldeep had made some mistakes, he had stagnated for a while, but he has got a lot of talent and is probably one of India’s brightest prospects for the future. It’s great that he has come back. I hope he has learnt some valuable lessons for him to do well now,” he told News9.

Bharat Arun feels the wrist spinners are expected to play a key part in India vs West Indies series.

“Wrist spinners have done very well for Team India. But then there was a point when they were a little stagnant. Because with a lot of analysis coming up, they knew what was coming and hence even the batters started working towards it. But again, it’s about evolving. With the World Cup in mind, if India can get around with all the talented bowlers, and identify the players who will play for them in the World Cup and so I feel that there is no better way than the bilateral ODI series to test who are those players,” he further added.
