To note, India did not pick Suryakumar Yadav in the first ODI encounter. Yadav heads into the ODI series after having smashed his 3rd T20I century — 51-ball 112 not out in the 3rd T20I against Sri Lanka on Sunday. However, the 32-year-old has not managed to be consistent in the ODI format, scoring 4 single-digit scores in his last 5 innings in the 50-over format.
Currently, Suryakumar cannot fit in the Indian playing XI as the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill are doing well for the team. In 2022, Shreyas had amazing outing in the ODIs. He scored his maiden ODI hundred against South Africa in October and scored at a rapid pace quite prolifically against every opponent. The right-handed batter scored 724 runs in just 15 innings.

Gill also had an excellent last year and he continued his good form in the first ODI encounter against SriLanka. The right-handed batter stroked 70 runs off just 60 balls and gave his side a strong start with the bat.
- With KL Rahul doing the keeping duties, it is very tough to slot Suryakumar in the middle order.
- Surya can be included in place of Rahul in the middle order. But, then Ishan Kishan needs to be included at the top of the order replacing Gill and do the wicketkeeping duties.
- Given Shubman’s form in the ODI arena, it is unlikely that he will be dropped from the opening slot.
- Similarly, team India management is also likely to stick with Rahul atleast for the second ODI.
